Microphone and audio quality problems Y540 Win10 1903

2019-11-05, 23:22 PM

So after returning home today I found that my microphone and audio quality have significantly worsened over night and I mean SIGNIFICANTLY. Before there was not a beep, background noise, buzzing etc. now my mic has all of those combined with me sounding like I'm speaking from an other room. Audio is also a lot louder but lower quality, there seems to be timely buzzing/background noise even at around the same volume as before (I used 20/100 before now even 7-8 is loud)

Leading up to problem: I found win 10 updating some softwares and Vantage asked me to log in again

Tried so far: Updateing, completly reinstalling Realtek drivers (Complete deletion, win 10 auto install and manual software install from both the lenovo driver page and official realtek website)
Turning off/on dolby audio (On other forums people say it worked, no luck)

Uninstalling Nvidia Audio drivers (Tought it might cause interference, nope)

Solved! See the solution

For the audio problem, I would try to rule out a driver issue by switching to Windows 10's default High Definition Audio Device driver.

  • Right-click start and open Device Manager.
  • Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section
  • Right-click on your Realtek High Definition auto device and select "Update Driver"
  • Select "Browse my computer for Driver Software"
  • Select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
  • Select "High Definition Audio Device" and then click Next.
  • Reboot as needed and then test.

You may also notice a list of older Realtek drivers listed when you select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer", so if available, you can also try an older Realtek driver to see if that resolves the problem.

Cheers,

Yup problem found, thank you!
Somehow the official Realtek drivers are so much worse than whatever "High Definition Audio Device" might be I actually wouldn't believe you if you told me.

And now here are some key words for people googleing the same problem:
Microphone problems after update
Microphone quality worsened
Windows 10 11.05 update November 5th update sound problems

Hi, sorry, I translate from French to English.

Thank you for your tutorial, I applied it, it solved my microphone problem. However, this causes another problem: a crackling sound every time.
Did you notice it too? I repeated the procedure several times, and it's always the same: either the microphone works and we have crunches at the audio trigger, or the opposite ...

Yes ocasional crackling is present.

No, no idea how to get rid of it

I just live with it since it only happenes when I'm not playing any audio.

If you find a solution that makes it work and not crackle please respond.

I've found a solution which fixes BOTH the sound and the microphone qualities: https://www.reddit.com/r/Lenovo/comments/e7twu3/microphone_quality_suddenly_really_awful_y540/fanimef/

Weird, it fixed both for me... Can you make sure in the Device Manager that this driver (version 6.0.1.8573) is used for your audio device?

Thank you for providing the solution.

I had been struggling for the past 4-6 months and your solution solved my problem. its just that when using the microphone there is a little bit of distortion, My guess is its generally because of the background noise if you have and suggestion on how to reduce the background noise i am very much thankful.

The built in mic suddenly stopped working for me today. I do remember the past few days having some windows updates happen, but it was working fine yesterday so i'm not sure. Tried the solution above with the different drivers but no success. Any other possible fixes for this? TIA
