Possible to add SATA drive to M.2-only laptop?

2016-03-25, 19:40 PM

Hello -

From this review of the 80NV0029US (in the 15" Y700 series), it sounds as if the SATA port does not come ready for installation of a second hard drive...and as if the cable/connector may be hard or impossible to get.

Does anyone know whether this can be done, and if so, how easily?

Likewise, does anyone know if this is possible with the new 80RU00ARUS (in the 15" 700 series)?

I spoke with a tech who seemed to be saying that it is impossible to add a SATA drive to the 80RU00ARUS, even though the 80RU00AQUS uses both the M.2 and the SATA ports. Same machine, same hard drive ports. But he indicated that the SATA port cannot be used on the ARUS, and that the SATA connector/cable used in the AQUS cannot be supplied.

My alternative is this Dellcheaper and somewhat slower with an i5 quad-core; heavier with a stronger battery; similar graphics card; similar 256GB SSD in the M.2 port, but WITH the connectors necessary to add a SATA drive.

Thanks!

Hi tc99 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It is possible to SATA drive on ideapad 700-15ISK with M.2 SSD originally came with similar to 80NV0029US (with 256 GB Solid-State Drive only) similar to 80RU00ARUS ( 256GB SSD only).

It maybe that issues at the moment with adding hdd was the compatible SATA connector (item4 page 41 manual and steps ) that may be hard to order due to availability.

As per product specification sheet:

Some: HDD / 2.5" wide, 7mm high

Some: Hybrid drive with 8GB NAND fl ash memory / 2.5" wide, 7mm high

Some: M.2 Solid State Drive (SSD), via M.2 card slot

If you would like ideapad 700-15ISK with both harddrive and SSD fully equipped and ready to go :

80RU00AQUS is your option with Hard Drive :  1 TB HDD + 128 GB SSD  / 512GB SDD.

Hope this answered your query.

Update us how you would like to proceed and which would be best for you.

Regards

Thanks for your reply. While reading it, I noticed a link to another post in the forum sidebar: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Y700-HDD-cable/m-p/2232470

Based on that post, I am quite skeptical.

Hi tc99 ,

Based on your initial question , it is possible and again this thread pointed out current challenge on availability of the connector as mentioned.

But if you are getting a complete 80RU00AQUS  :  1 TB HDD + 128 GB SSD  / 512GB SDD , parts availability is no longer an issue since it would have its own connector and is all ready to go with properly installed software.

Take your time reviewing both machines and decide on what what works for you best.

Hope that I was able to provide you information you would need to balance things for your purchase here on our community.

Regards
