Reports of COIL WHINE in 2021 Legion Laptops

2021-04-17, 17:58 PM

Hello,

I've been patiently waiting for the arrival of the Lenovo 5 Pro (16ACH6H) in my region (Canada).  While waiting, I've been checking in with the LenovoLegion wing of Reddit, and have noticed the incoming reports (from other countries/regions) of 'coil whine'.

For those that don't know, it is a high pitched frequency noise that can occur when an electrical current passes through certain parts, causing them to vibrate.

Coil whine seems to be occuring in both the 2021 Legion 5 and 5 Pro (limited info on 7 models), with both Nvidia 3060 and 3070 graphic chips.  It's not clear how widespread this problem is, as a % of units affected; but it would likely be going underreported overall, as many people don't have sensitive enough hearing to even notice such a high pitched frequency when it exists.  But for those that do have good hearing that covers some higher frequencies, coil whine can be very noticeable and highly irritating.  In my personal experience... I've commented to friends at times, about hearing coil whine in various products, only to be told that they could not likewise hear what I'm hearing.

So, if you purchase a (Legion) laptop and it happens to emit an annoying high pitched frequency at some/most/all the time... what do you do?  If you send it in for repairs or part replacement, the persons doing the repairing may be incapable of hearing/experiencing the coil whine and confirming the problem/fix!  If it's a widespread problem, a replacement laptop of the same or similar model may have the same problem... and with Covid supply chains being what they are, waiting for new stock to arrive to replace your whiney laptop may take a couple months!

So if I proceed and buy my coveted Legion 5 Pro when it becomes available through Lenovo Canada... and it turns out my laptop DOES exhibit coil whine - what will be my options - and what will be the cost to me (if any) and window of time to implement?  Repair it... exchange it for a new laptop... exchange it for a refurbished laptop... refund...etc.?

And if the official Lenovo team scans these forums, I hope they/you will weigh in on the issue of coil whine appearing in your 2021 Legion laptops.  If you can confirm receiving reports, how widespread this issue is being reported, and what steps Lenovo is taking as more laptops continue to be manufactured and shipped.

Thanks for your time!

Hello @Le Nova,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Coil whine is not really an issue since this is common for machines with GPU's.

This reply from Voithos one of the support specialists actually explains it better: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gaming-Laptops/Coil-whine-or-fan-noise-Legion-5/m-p/5074645?page=1#5302444

Hope this helps.
Regards,

Thanks for a response.  However, all you did was dismiss the issue of coil whine.  It's "common" = it can happen.  Defects can happen to car lines too... sometimes the defects are so common, they recall the whole lot of them!  Just because a defect can be common, doesn't mean the defect is supposed to be there.

Let's just presume for a moment that coil whine MAY be an issue in the 2021 Legion lineup, and I purchase a laptop that exhibits this phenomenon AND I have the hearing capability to observe it (and be irritated by it).  The link you pointed me to would suggest I wait at least 14 days ('a couple of weeks') - much much longer, I presume, if I don't use it on a daily basis - hoping that it will quiet down and no longer be an irritant.  If after 2 or more weeks, it hasn't quieted down... then try 'replacing' it.

I originally asked for a very clear breakdown of what I could expect regarding my options.  By that, I'm still waiting for clarification.   What time limits are there... 10 days, 14 days, 30 days, 60 days, 1 year, etc.... and how that relates to my ability to refund, exchange for new, exchange for refurbished, repair of unit, etc.   And if any of my return options normally expire after 10 or 14 days, but I opt to follow LENOVO's advice (see link you sent) and let my coil whine "settle in" for over 2 weeks before making a claim, will I be screwed?

Also... I previously asked "if you can confirm receiving reports (of coil whine in the 2021 Legion line, higher than normal), how widespread this issue is being reported, and what steps Lenovo is taking as more laptops continue to be manufactured and shipped?"  Is there a response you could offer?

Thanks for your assistance!

What a shame, they haven't responded to you within a week from your last reply.
All I can tell, I used to have a Legion 7i (2020), it had coil whine. I ended up returning it, since 3000 series came out.
Now I have a Legion 5 pro with 3070, which also has coil whine- me and my girlfriend can hear it from 5 meters away, while sitting on a coach on the other side of the room.
I will be returning my Legion 5 pro and likely choose a different brand.
I've had multiple laptops during my life and none of them had this issue, that is, until I decided to give Lenovo a try!

For anyone interested in buying Lenovo Gaming Laptops:
I'd stay away from Lenovo Laptops for now until they fix all their issues.

True, Lenovo does have great products but .. their gaming laptops aren't that great..  Don't get me wrong. I love the Y740 and its style, but I wish it would offer more and today I do regret I did choose that laptop. I wish someone would warn me about the issues of this laptop, there would be a good chance I'd have chosen a different brand and a thicker laptop.

For anyone who is interested in buying one I do recommend you to make sure that there's no other product which can offer more than Y740.

Make sure to make a good research and if you are doing your research on Youtube.. There will be a good chance that many reviews will be actually better than the reality [as it was in my case]. Not many of these reviews want to talk about the issues of this laptop like poor thermals or other problems..

Lenovo right now offers probably the best in class performance for the money you spend.. Some coil wine does not change that.. its probably a bad batch of fans... easily changeable for very cheap.... coming from a Y540 with i5 9300H and an rtx 2060 and Legion 5 Pro now with R7 5800H and 3070 I can say very confidently the next one is also a lenovo.... every brand including lenovo makes defective or just outright bad products this doesn't make every brand bad... lenovo delivers on raw performance with the Legion brand...

No coil wine on either.... if there was something wrong I would notice it... I repair computers (pcb repairs not just a simple format..:p ) and it also happens that I am also a sound engineer....

But you've heard coil whine on other laptops now and again, yes?  Your hearing can pick up on it when it's there, yes?

Best performance for the price, I agree 100% with that. But we are here just to let people know that many customers have widespread quality issues on these 1500+ eur laptops.
Then it is their choice to make whether to buy the machine or not.
It's not exclusively coil whine- it's stuck pixels, hinges, battery life, touchpad click function not working, buzz when moving mouse, high pitch noise through audio device when it's plugged in AUX port.

And considering the extremely long wait-times for orders.. That's helpful to know.

Most points are in fact software related and pretty easy to fix if you just google your problem.. hardware problems can me fixed replaced or refunded in most cases under standard warranty...
