SSD as a second drive for a Legion y530

2018-09-23, 15:38 PM

Hey , I recently purchased the legion y530 with a 1TB 5400 RPM hard drive, the one that has an i7th with 6 core processor with a 8 GB Ram. I didn't chose the SSD option as a second drive and now I am regretting it. I was wondering if it will be possible for me to buy one and install it as the second drive but still keep my original drive, like using both drives (I know nothing about computers). Thank you guys!

Yes, you can install an SSD drive in adition to the HDD.

The SSD should be the First drive with Windows 10 as it is much faster than the HDD.

You will have to move Windows 10 from the HDD to the SSD, or reinstall Windows on the SSD and make it your Boot drive.

as alex5723 wrote you can (and should!) do that.
You should clone your drive onto the SSD and then wipe the hard drive.
There's various software you can use to do that. The one I use is Acronis True Image, but it's not free. There's few free tools and also you can use a free Linux live USB drive to clone it.

Hi,
Sorry for late reply - holiday!
the 128GB SSD is an NVMe drive. While you can clone it onto 2.5" SATA SSD it's not a perfect solution.
It'd be best if you get an M.2 NVMe drive instead and clone your 128GB drive onto the new one. I did that to upgrade to Samsung 256GB drive.
the way I did it is I made an image backup using Acronis True Image (note: it's not free, but I have it from work. Can be done with free tools as well), swapped the SSD, restored the image onto the new SSD. You might have to reclaim the unused storage by extending the main partition.
