Screen Stuttering

2019-09-09, 2:37 AM

I am having a massive issue with the image quailty of my Legion 15 inch Y740. When I play any game on my laptop I get really bad screen stuttering, even though I have an average FPS above 144. I did not have this screen stuttering issue back when I first got my laptop, when I had Bios 1.07, but after I updated to Bios 1.09 my image quality dropped dramatically. Is anyone else having this issue, and is there anything that I can do to fix it?

My windows and graphics drivers are all up-to-date, and the processors I have in my laptop are an I7 8750H, and an RTX 2070 Max-q. Currently running on Bios 1.10.

I would recommend downgrading to 1.07 and testing if the issue presists, if it doesn't, try checking the BIOS update changelog to find out what caused the image quality to drop.

Where would would I find Bios 1.07 for my Laptop, or how do I reflash my Bios to 1.07? The only available Bios that I can find online for reflashing my Y740 is Bios 1.06.

Open your laptop's driver page and scroll expand the UEFI/BIOS tab, There should be a subtab named "BIOS update for windows 10", and right below it 2 files, one named "BIOS update" and the other "BIOS update readme", right click on the download icon of the bios update file and choose "Copy link address" and paste in your browser's URL bar, change the "avcn##ww" to the name corresponding with 1.07 (You'll have to do some research on your part, as my Y540 uses the ##ww scheme and not the 1.## scheme) and then after you download it, you'll have to enable BIOS downgrading in the BIOS itself, should go fine.

So I have found that Bios 1.07 for my Laptop is AVCN17WW however when I plugged that into my search bar after replacing AVCN20WW with AVCN17WW all that ever came up was, "404 - File or directory not found."

However Bios 1.06 does exsist, and that I can download for my laptop. But I dont know how safe it is to Reflash my laptop to Bios 1.06, because it originally shipped with 1.07. Do you think that It would be ok to try Reflashing to Bios 1.06?

Bios 1.08 also exsists, that was before Lenovo introduced the new fan control software in 1.09 that gave me all these issues. So tomorrow I will install and test Bios 1.08 to see if the issue still persists.

I have reflashed my Bios to 1.08, and although the fans were running at max speed all the time, the stuttering prevailed. So I reflashed my Bios back to 1.10 and recieved much better results than what I initially had running 1.10, however I still had the stuttering occur. Are there any other ideas that you might have that might solve this issue, or should I send this to the Lenovo Service Center to get looked at?

I know this might sound stupid, but have you tried enabling v-sync?

I usually see stuttering when the framerate is higher than my panel's refresh rate, also it might be a specific game issue.

If enabling v-sync and experimenting on another game doesn't show different results then I would recommend you send your laptop in.

One of my games does have an option for V-sync within the games graphic settings. However I had the issue persist with it turned on, as well as turned off. Oddly enough my game had an update recently, and the occurence of this stuttering has dropped down dramatically. However I still occasionally get a stutter spike. When compared to playing minecraft however I still get the weird lack-of-smoothness when I play it, so Im not sure what is causing it anymore. Do you think hot Ram might have something to do with this?
