Second SSD upgrade for new Lenovo Legion 5 17IMH05H

2021-02-09, 15:22 PM

Hello everyone! I've just joined...... can you help me, please?

I've just bought a new Lenovo Legion 5 17IMH05H with a 512Gb SSD.

I understand that this machine will take a second SSD. According to my research, this would be a PCIe NVMe.

I am hoping to get a 1Tb drive.

My questions:

1)   Have I understood the situation correctly?

2)   Is this a difficult task?

In the past, I have self-installed an HDD upgrade to my MacBook Pro (quite a while ago!).

I am not a tech genius. Just a semi-retired English teacher, teaching online.

Jack, I researched the Lenovo Legion 5 further...  and I discovered that you can actually install either a second SSD or a second NVMe m.2 drive.

So I cancelled my order for a second 1Tb HDD and ordered a 1Tb NVMe m.2.

I installed it myself.

The physical installation took me 40 minutes (note: I have only ever taken the back off a laptop once before!).  Getting Windows 10 to recognise the new m.2 took longer... because the model I had chosen was a Samsung EVO NVMe which requires a download of special drivers.

However, the installation is now complete.

I thought you would like to know this feature of the Legion 5. The Lenovo guide you looked at only shows the configurations offered by Lenovo. It doesn’t show the full picture.

Here is a link to the YouTube guide I followed. (There are other YT guides showing how to install a second SSD or NVMe m.2).

Thanks for your help.

Hello @misterspeakeasy,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I checked the PSREF page of the machine: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/Legion/Lenovo_Legion_5_17IMH05H and it shows that this laptop is able to hold up to two drives, 1x 2.5" HDD + 1x M.2 2242 SSD or 1x 2.5" HDD + 1x M.2 2280 SSD

This would mean that if you already have an SSD installed you would only have room for a 2.5" HDD.

It's a really easy process you should be able to follow this hardware maintenance guide for easy success with upgrades(Page 32): https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/legion5_17imh_arh.pdf

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Jack_Lenovo1

Thank you, Jack. There's no way a second SSD can be installed then? (I keep coming across posts for Lenovo Legion 5 which suggest that a PCIe NVMe can be installed; or, as a muppet, have I got the wrong end of the stick?!) I have a couple of sets of tiny screwdrivers (which I used to install an HDD on my MacBook Pro about 7 years ago. I assume (one or two of) these will do the job? Thanks for your rapid reply!!! (I'd like to get something from Amazon asap so I am off and running!) It's a LOVELY machine (I have a Lenovo Flex 5 too.... with AMD Ryzen 7)...

Hello @misterspeakeasy,

Thanks for writing back.

Since the PSREF page indicates that this system can only have one M.2 SSD and an HDD pairing then that would most likely mean that this is the case.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the machine. Last time I have upgraded storage on a laptop myself I personally used small screwdrivers to do the trick however if you have a complete set that would be even better.

Let me know if I can help out with anything else.

If you also have any other questions don't hesitate to post again.

Regards,

Jack_Lenovo1
