USB Type-C point of existence?

2021-06-10, 17:55 PM

Good evening people, I own a Legion Y530 (i5 8300H - GTX 1050M) and I'd like to ask a question about its single USB Type-C port. What's the point of having it, what can I do with it? The only thing I have managed to do with it is to connect Type-C earphones and listen to some music. I can't transfer data (with a Type-C to Type-C cable), I can't charge a phone or power up a cooling pad, it's not a Thunderbolt 3 port to connect an eGPU, so how can I properly use it?

Thank you for your time.

Hello @konakritid2,

Based on the PSREF page the USB-C port is only 3.1 and not thunderbolt.

Most newer models have thunderbolt built in.

The USB-C 3.1 is generally just different from USB 3.1 in terms of how the connector looks since most modern devices have compatibility with USB-C this is where you would use the port ideally.

Hi konakritid2,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

If it's one of the older types, then it's mostly used for keyboards, mice and headsets, but if you please provide the community with the Machine Type & Model (MTM ex: 90DG0023US) of your device. This will help to show us the configuration and specs of your specific machine so that we can better assist you.

Regards

Voithos

MTM: 81FV007SGM So if it was a newer type would it be Thunderbolt 3? As far as I know neither Legion Y530 nor Y540 have thunderbolt support.

Yeah, but the problem is I can't connect my laptop to another laptop with USB Type-C port through a Type-C to Type-C cable. Neither laptop recognises each other. It's like I never connected them. It's essentially a restricted-use USB Type-C port.

Can it be used for connecting an external hard drive and/or external Blu-ray drive?

Hello @konakritid2,

Sorry for the late reply.

Yes it should be capable of connecting external drives that have a USB-C connection.

However I personally don't use a machine with one so if you could share with the community if it works well for you.

Regards,

Jack_Lenovo1
