Upgrading RAM and Storage for my Legion y520

2018-05-30, 8:18 AM

Hello guys , so last year I bought a Lenovo Legion y520 and I would really love to upgrade the RAM from 8GB to 16GB and also add a 2nd SSD or HDD so I can move from 256SSD to maybe 512SSD or 256SSD+1TB HDD .

The thing is that I do not know exactly if I could upgrade the storage and if the RAM card that I was looking at is compatible .

I have the Legion y520-15ikbn-80WK with i7-7700HQ and 1050 4GB .

The RAM that I was looking at is https://www.pcgarage.ro/memorii-notebook/crucial/8gb-ddr4-2400mhz-cl17-12v-single-ranked-x8/ .

You can always check the PSREF document for your Lenovo computer to see what kind of RAM it needs. According to the PSREF document of the Y520 (found here), the Legion Y520 needs DDR4-2400 memories.

The memory module you linked to is also DDR4-2400, for laptops. It should work with your Legion Y520.

Did you check that you have a single 8GB memory module currently? The Y520 has only two banks, so if you currently have 2x4GB modules, you cannot add the 8GB because there is no free memory bank. If you currently have 1x8GB, you are good to go.

As for your other question regarding the storage, can you confirm that you currently have a single 256GB m.2 SSD in your computer?

Please also note, that RAM, SSD and HDD components are FRU components (=Factory Replacable Units). You as the customer are not supposed to touch them or change them, they are not intended to be user serviceable.

If you still want to go ahead with servicing yourself, make sure you check the hardware maintenance manual of the Legion Y520.

I have checked with Speccy and regarding the RAM slots , I currently have 1×8GB and for the SSD , I think it is placed into the m.2 spot , is there anyway for me to check that? I do not want to replace what I already have I just want to add more :)

And by the way thank you for your response

You can check in Device Manager what kind of disk you have currently connected. (Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager)

My Y520 shows two disks:

If I do a Google search on SAMSUNG MZVLW256 I can find out that is is a M.2 SSD. Similarly I could look up my other drive to find out it is a 1TB SATA drive.

There might be apps that show you this information directly, but this method does not require any external apps :-)

The Legion Y520 uses DDR4-2400 memory. I don't know if the system would work with slower than that? Maybe someone else can answer that. But you will be losing performance by using slower memory, even if it works.

You can always refer to the system specification to check on the memory you need for the different Lenovo systems. The Y520 spec is available here.

Re: Upgrading RAM and Storage for Legion y520

Can anyone tell me the RAM upgrade capabilities for my Lenovo Legion Y520 laptop?

I want to wind up with 32 GB memory, but do I need 1 stick of 16 GB additional or

2 sticks of 16GB  to replace 2 sticks of 8 GB

Currently, the Settings screen shows:

Device Name:  DESKTOP-8QRTJFL

Processor:         Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.8GHz

Installed RAM    16.0 GB (15.9 GB usable)

and

Edition Windows 10 Home

Version 1803
