Upgrading the RAM 2933 MHz DDR4

2020-07-25, 3:58 AM

I did find the specs for my Lenovo Legion 5 and it can be upgraded to 32GB. The RAM type is 2933 MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM. I don't want to buy the wrong RAM so could you point me to somewhere that has the exact compatible RAM I can purchase to upgrade. I will need to get 2X16 please.

Although the specifications call for 2933MHz DDR4 RAM, the RAM that shipped with that model is actually 3200MHz DDR4 RAM, which is then clocked down to 2933MHz by the sysems memory controller.

Legion 5-15IMH05H (Lenovo) - Type 81Y6

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-5-15imh05h/81y6/parts/display/compatible

One of the Manufacturers that Lenovo purchases the RAM it used in the Legion 5 is Micron, which sells it ram under its retail name Crucial.    Below are the two 32GB (2x16) options they have that should work in your system.

Note:   The Ballistix RAM is only recommended if your Laptop's BIOS supports XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles), which I do not believe it does, and if it does not it only run at only 2666MHz, whereas the ct2k16g4sfd832a kit will run at 2933MHz without XMP.     Just to be safe, before ordering I would recommend that you contact Crucial directly via their live chat to verify compatibility before ordering.

Crucial 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 SODIMM

Crucial Ballistix SODIMM 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Gaming Memory (Black)  (***requires XMP support to run beyond 2666MHz ***)

You might be able to find it a few dollars cheaper on Amazon, but Crucial's Support is excellent should you have any issues, and it worth a few extra bucks to me.

Thanks for that information, so if I buy this https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct2k16g4sfd832a  I can just put the RAM in and don't need to configure anything?

Well, I just checked and the Crucial RAM does not work with the Lenovo Legion 5 I just purchased. This means I have to use downgraded DDR4 2666Mhz and not the advertised 2933Mhz? If that's true you shouldn't advertise the Legion 5 having 32GB max capacity at 2933Mhz. I will see if I can return this laptop to B&H since I ordered it just 2-weeks ago.

Wow, that is crazy. Really do I have to use downgraded 2666 MHz with 32GB RAM?

This is my conversation thread with B&H and taken together with the Lenovo support makes me think you have to use 2666Mhz if you just want to buy RAM and upgrade. I still haven't heard back from B&H after this to send it back but if this is the case I want to send this back to them because this is a stupid situation.

Re:Upgrading the RAM 2933 MHz DDR4

I've had this laptop 1-month now and neither Lenovo nor B&H have shown me any way to use 32GB of DDR4 2933Mhz RAM in this laptop even though that's exactly what I paid for. B&H told me to use 2666Mhz RAM and Lenovo listed 2 options here both which don't work because option 1 requires a bios the Legion 5 does not have and option 2 shows the recommended RAM is not compatible. This is the first Lenovo I have ever purchased and it's the last Lenovo. I can't believe the lack of support in simply getting what I paid for. I'm buying ASUS next.

For anyone reading this, I successfully added 32 GB of RAM to my Lenovo Legion 5i, in the form of (2) 16 GB sticks of 3200.   No idea why the marketing geniuses keep saying the max is 16 GB.

Sure, I purchased the following. Just know that any DDR-4, 3200 1.2V ram will work.
