XMP support for Y540 (and others) when?

2019-08-14, 11:45 AM

I've recieved my Y540-17IRH laptop (i5 version) and its performing well except when it comes to the RAM. The notion that a gaming machine does not have XMP enabled seems very odd to me but this seems to be the case with not just this device but many others as well. There is no hardware limitation for this at all and the 3000 mhz stick (currently at 2400) that I have runs at the same 1.2v as the 2666mhz stick that came included so its not a matter of power or heat-generation either. I'd really like to see this support added to the machine as I really don't want to have to resort to bios modding just to have a rather common gaming feature accessible when its currently locked behind a software wall.

Is there any chance this is being worked on and will be released in the near future? If not, I need to know so I can send my faster one back and talk to sales about getting more ram.

Greetings and welcome new Lenovo forum user from Sweden,

Exceeding the Intel CPU memory controller specification when using XMP will void Intel's warranty as it causes more wear on the processors and than potential failure.

So I assuming Lenovo does not and maybe never provide XMP support that could make them liable for the damages.

Now I would like to direct your attention to this Reddit post screen grab of a Intel customer service technician's response to a warranty inquiry Enabling xmp voids my warranty.

That is deeply unfortunate. XMP support in gaming machines seems like a given. I don't know what the limitations of the H series CPUs are but if they cannot handle high memoryspeeds, perhaps gaming laptops should be sold with K or non-K variants instead of weaker products.

Still, thank you for the quick reply. I'll return my ram and speak with Lenovo about replacing it with the normal JEDEC sticks they supply.

I would suggest using the CL15 2666 Hyper X memory, works to perfection. Much lower timings vs stock sticks (CL19). Equates to around 3200mhz in speed/memory bandwidth tests vs Corsairs 3000/3200 high CL offerings. Plus a lot cheaper, especially for 32GB. Much better minimums/highs in games vs stock sticks.
