Y520-15IKBN + Samsung 960 Pro - BIOS Intel RST doesn't see the drive

2018-04-09, 6:46 AM

I want to take advantage of the NVMe in the combination of Intel RST but, BIOS can only see the SATA SSD wgile NVMe cannot even be booted. If I select AHCI, then I can boot both drives.

I installed the Intel RST User interface and driver but it only recognizes the SATA (which is empty), like it is shown on the picture.

Any ideas??

Found the solution, but it's not worth the effort:

Intel RST: read - 2267.93 MB/s write - 1665.88 MB/s

AHCI: read - 2788.35 MB/s write - 1766.25 MB/s

If you insist, this is the workaround:

install Intel Rapid Storage Tecnology driver from the Lenovo Support website

Copy the folder Intel Rapid Storage from Program Files to the USB where you have your Windows 10 installation.

Setup the Intel RST in BIOS and when you're installing windows 10 from the USB, and it asks you to lead the driver, select the folder, and subfolder with INF files. After some waiting, you'll see the 960 PRO and you can install on it.

However, Samsung Magician will NOT work, the speeds will be lower.

What do you need Intel RST for?

I thought the 960 PRO would be faster. I guess I failed to notice before buying the laptop that the speed will depend on the version of the PCIE, not just on the availability of the M.2 slot.

You can increase the DMI link speed. The BIOS setting for that is hidden but can be changed with Insyde's H2OUVE utility.

1. Dump the relevant variable:

H2OUVE -gv var-setup.txt -g A04A27F4-DF00-4D42-B552-39511302113D -n Setup

2. Editvar-setup.txt and change the value after "C10:" from 02 to 03.

3. Then, save it back:

H2OUVE -sv var-setup.txt

4. Restart to take effect.

(Note: I am writing the above from memory, there might be some error in it.)

If you need longer instructions, there's the thread about it: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gaming-Laptops/Lenovo-Y700-15ISK-High-Performance-NVMe-SSD-capped-at-PCIE-2-0/td-p/3518755

And a blog post by the guy who found it first: http://www.geektech.co.nz/how-to-unlock-the-nvme-performance-on-the-lenovo-y700
