Y520 didn't ship with SATA connector or cage

2017-08-06, 18:32 PM

I received my Y520.  When looking at the web page, it said it supports both an M2 and a SATA drive.  I thought "great, I have an SSD at home that I can pop in."  When I configured, I said not to install one of the SATA drive options and just went with the 128GB M2 drive.

Well, when I opened up the laptop, there is not even a connector for the SATA drive, and no cage.  I called and got bounced around to five different numbers.  I couldn't get a straight answer on whether the laptop even supports the connector needed.

I'm bummed for two reasons - I can't get real support, and the laptop certainly didn't come as advertised.

Does anyone know whether I can buy the SATA connector/cable and cage?  If so, do you know what part numbers they are and where I can buy them?  TIA

If I ordered without a drive, I wouldn't expect a cage or a cable, if one was needed.  I have never taken that model apart so I don't know whether the connector can be added, and, if it is connected to a cable, where the cable was to be plugged in.  That isn't discussed in the maintenance manual.  I also wouldn't assume a drive could be added later.  With laptops getting thinner, more components are being soldered to the motherboard or are not upgradeable by all computer manufacturers.  Can you return it?

According to the hardware maintenance manual you are missing the following parts:

  • (5C50N00230) I/O Board L 80WK W/Cable
  • (5B40N00288) HDD Bracket L 80WK W/Foil

Contact technical support to order these and you should be able to install your hard drive afterwards.

Hopefully you can still get this sorted out.

I don't think that I/O Board L 80WK W/Cable is the solution.  The I/O board is already installed, as is that cable.  The cable for that I/O board plugs into the back of the motherboard (see p50 of the hardware maintenance manual) and the cable does not include the SATA power/data connector.

I believe you are correct about the HDD Bracket, however.

I don't believe any Y520 shipped with the HDD bracket for customers who chose only the M.2 SSD option. However in my case, the SATA connector is present as compared to yours. I would have to assume there was an assembly mistake in your case. The link to order the HDD bracket is below:

Very interesting.  Your theory on an assembly mistake could be true.  Look closely at our motherboards.  Yours is on the left, mine on the right.  Mine has several extra inductors.  Yours doesn't even have the pads to support these inductors.  Also, the cable connector on mine is much closer to the unmasked area.  I think we have different motherboards altogether - or different revisions of the same motherboard.  I have a 1060 installed - I wonder if that is a reason for the different motherboards?

Indeed the motherboard looks different, my config only has the 1050 Ti.

I have the same problem as the OP. I ordered it expecting that it wouldn't have one installed, but not that it would never be possible to ever install one. If I would have known that I would have gone the SATA route and gotten a HDD instead of SSD. Is there a route to go through to have them fix/replace the board to allow for both?

Can both of you share the model numbers of the machines and specify which one has the missing SATA connectors?
