Y540-15IRH does not charge at all with lower wattage power adapters

2019-10-12, 12:12 PM

Hello Community,

i got my Legion Y540 15IRH some weeks ago and all seemed fine until about 2 weeks ago the Notebook didnt charge anymore.

Facts:

I got 3 different power adapters:

- 230W 20V 11.5A   Lenovo (came with the Y540 Notebook)

-   90W 20V   4.5A   Lenovo (came with a Docking Station)

-   45W 20V   2.24A Lenovo (came with a Thinkpad)

All 3 of these used to charge my Y540 properly.

Lower W / A did it slower of course, as expected.

Only the 230W/ 11.5A Made the Y540 go into "Plugged in Mode", as expected

All 3 adapters allow me to use the Y540 when plugged in.

Problem:

Neither the 90W nor the 45W adapter charge my Notebook at all anymore.

What i tried:

Charging while on battery saver settings => No charge with the 2 lower W chargers

Charging while system is shut off and Notebook is closed => LED indicator turns Amber but does not charge at all (not even after 24h of being plugged in and shut off)

Uninstalled the  drivers for "Microsoft AC Adapter" and "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" => Made the indicator show 1% battery instead of 0%  but no behavior change  besides that

Updated the BIOS to latest version => no change

Opened up the Notebook, unplugged the battery and reset the power by pressing the power button for several seconds => no change

So here i am and dont have a clue why this does not work anymore.
Id love to get some hints on what more i can do or if maybe its a hardware problem.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe someone found out, which update caused this behaviour? Maybe older BIOS may help here?

I tried with older BIOS, but without success.

Finally, I bought a female-to-male square adapter, replaced the signal resistor with a 4,6k Ohm one regarding to this page:

And now it works even with a 90W charger.
