Y540 cpu undervolt

2019-09-18, 15:48 PM

So I finally got my Y540, i7-9750h, rtx 2060 and was running some tests and Undervolting the CPU since it gets really hot from factory settings, after tweaking it for a while I ended up with the best score being at -300mv (2984 undervolted vs 2620 factory settings in Cinebench), but all the guides point ou to something around -125~150mv range.

The game performance looks stable and a bit cooler than the original settings.

I was wondering if I'm missing something or if any of you guys are getting similar results with this laptop model?

Feel free to point out any possible tweaks and share your results!

The good thing about undervolting is you cant really do any permanent dagame to your laptop. So if -300mv works for you, then you're lucky. I can only get to -180mv. Beyond that my laptop is unstable and reboots while gaming.

Undervolting the cache is usually what causes crashing, you can go pretty low while undervolting the core though but doing that can cause the CPU to not recieve enough power so it has to clock itself lower than it wants, I'd recommend you monitor your clockspeeds and then change your voltages accordingly.

Gie11 you are talking about the undervolt of the core right? My cache is at -125mv at the moment.

I was following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14o69V6_ZCM&t=419s and right over the -300mv seems to be the turning point of when I start to actually lose performance.

Still I am suspicious of my results, seems to good to be true compared to other machines.

I just don't want my laptop to melt with those 80-90's range temps.

Hi. So, i have a y540 as well and with and -150mv undervolt I'm still easily getting temperatures above 90ºC in some cores.
Any tips?

I was under the impression that cache and core should be the same undervoltage levels.  I am at -154 on both.

And in AAA games, I think there is not choice but to have 80-95c temps unless you use a cooling pad, etc.

It is just the way things are with the existing CPU's and cooling mechanisms...

Y540 cpu undervolt

Right now i'm in -150 I'm using a cooling pad and I still have thermal throttling in games like COD. Package temp. is lower than before but i'm still operating in peaks. I rather prefer to lose performance than my laptop. This is a bit frustrating because, certainly will decrease the life span of components. If someone or even lenovo could recommend "safe" configuration would be very interesting, inside intel extreme tuning utility is possible to export configurations.

Are you seeing any impact in the game? Like big frame drops or something along the lines like that? I think you are probably thinking about this too much. All gaming computers have issues like this and really this is not a computer that is going to last you 10 years. I did drop off the clock multipliers a little bit and this helps and all of my games run perfectly but it is still going to get hot! R
