Y540 fan in idle mode

2019-12-16, 17:15 PM

Hello,

I've just bought an Y540-17IRH (9750H - 1660Ti) and I'm disapointed by the fan noise when idle.
I was expecting to have no noise at all in idle mode (I've enabled intel GPU and forced it for internet or doing word / excel) but I can clearly hear the fans :(

I've just updated everything yesterday (latest win 10 / nvidia drivers / laptop bios BHCN35WW) and I'm wondering if it's normal to have this fan noise which is annoying. I don't care having noise with 1660Ti when playing, but for office work, why this noise ?
FYI, I'm in quiet mode in Vantage

Solved! See the solution

My fans are off in idle while browsing and watching videos, like it should be.

Check if your windows is installing something in the background like Windows updates. Check if balanced windows profile (on the battery icon) is active.

Nop, no update in progress, I've installled everything yesterday and  as I said I'm up to date.

I don't have any choice in power options, but balanced (recommended) is selected.

Did you update your bios ?

Yeah my bios is the same as yours.

Check your CPU speed in task manager. Is it running at low clock speeds? (800-1500 MHz)

You have to understand that Y540 is a performance laptop. i7 9750H is a very powerful (and very hot) CPU which needs to be cool down often.

Below is a review from notebookcheck of a similar device.

If noise if a major concern to you, then perhaps you should buy a thin laptop like X1 Carbon (NOT extream) instead.

I've checked, it never goes under 1.2GHz with 1% load.

I'm wondering if the noise doesn't come from the 7200 HDD, because it comes from the front right.

@Legions, I know it's a performance laptop, but I don't think this noise is normal.

Because I can hear sometime another fan noise which goes up then down, but when it stops, I still have this constant noise.

If it comes from the front right, then it is properly the hard disk.

Shouldn't it stop at some point ?

Is there a way to force it to stop to verify thi is my issue or is it a normal noise ?

Is the OS installed in the SSD or the hard disk?
