Y700-14isk Install additional hard drive in model bough with m.2 ssd and upgrade ram

2018-12-26, 10:54 AM

So I bought this laptop almost 3-4 years ago, with 16gb ram, i7 6700 HQ, Radeon r9 m375 graphics, and 512 GB SSD. 1st time ever trying to upgrade a laptop. I opened it up a few days back and noticed that there were 2 ram slots so I should be able to go up to 32 GB ram if its ddr4 and not ddr3/lpddr3. Also, I noticed space for what I believe is a 2.5 in hard drive but I didn't see any brackets nor any SATA cables or even a place to connect the drive to.

So my summarized questions would be:

1) How to find out what type of ram my computer uses to see if I can upgrade or not

2) Is it even possible for me to install a 2.5 in. drive (SSD or HDD haven't decided yet), and is my m.2 slot running on SATA or NVMe if I do decide to upgrade that instead (i heard there's a speed bottleneck with SATA).

Check PSREF. Your laptop supports DDR4-2133MHz modules. Faster modules will be downclocked to this frequency (if module supports it). Also it officially supports up to 16GB RAM.

You can install two disks in total - M.2 and 2.5" (bracket and cable are required). M.2 port supports both SATA3 and NMVe. Please provide SSD model to tell whenever it's NVMe or SATA3. NVMe is quite faster than SATA3, but I doubt you'll see much a difference between these two during normal use.

1) You can take out the other RAM and look at the model number and buy one (or buy a better one) that'll be the same size and supported.

2) You can install one, but you'll have to also purchase the SATA cable/bracket. You can get either an HDD or SDD for it. An SSD WILL be bottlenecked by the SATA connection, but it'll still be faster than running an HDD in that port.

Hope this helps.

Do you mean up to 16gb max or 16gb per SODIMM slot?

I went to Device Manager which said the installed SSD was LITEON CV1-8B512.

Any suggestions or links for the bracket and cable?

I also included pics I took when I opened my laptop up.  The closeup is of what I think is what the SATA cable will connect to. Just wanted confirmation though.

Any suggestions or links or the SATA cable and bracket? I will probably go with an SSD since less moving parts and less chance of me causing harm to it vs. an HDD since my laptop goes wherever I go most of the time.

For the RAM, your model officially only supports 16GB MAX - In total.

For the HDD/SSD slot, there doesn't seem to be a bracket or cable.

Here's a link of what I think SHOULD be correct:

https://www.ebay.com/p/Lenovo-Legion-Y720-HDD-Hard-Drive-Disk-Caddy-Tray-Bracket-Connector-Cable/1077019330?iid=112666397948&chn=ps

HERE is what you need (Model numbers):
Cable: 5C10K25544
Tray: 5B40K25518

You can find them exactly on here:

https://www.medion.com/lenovoserviceshop/welcome

^Though it may be more expensive - it's the safe route for compatibility.

To add to this, here is the discussion on the Y700 bracket and cable:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gaming-Laptops/Lenovo-Y700-Laptop-adding-HDD-which-cable-and-bracket-is/m-p/3309421#M888

Moreover, for the RAM, even though it officially only supports 16 in total, it MAY support more. Not guaranteed, but possible. I wouldn't risk it though if you can't return the memory you buy.

I'll be buying ram kits from Newegg or Amazon, so maybe I'll try out a 2x16gb kit and return if it doesn't work
