Y700-15ISK Can Only Boot & Install 32 Bit not 64 Bit

2017-08-01, 11:10 AM

Hello everyone. I am facing some troubles with my Lenovo Y700-15ISK laptop. Over the 9 months i owned the laptop i accidentally installed some adware that was bundled from a program i installed and i got sick of the ads so i created a Bootable Windows 10 64 bit USB from an ISO off Microsoft & used Rufus USB to create the bootable UEFI USB. The BIOS detects the USB but when i try boot the USB it just stays on the blue Windows 10 with the spinning dots and stays like that for enternity. I then thought since it wasn't booting Rufus screwed the USB up. I then tried using the Media creation tool from Microsoft & still no luck. I tried every USB port. I tried disabling Fastboot etc in BIOS & still same thing. I was almost about to give up then i thought maybe try boot a 32 bit Windows 10 USB and it worked. Can anyone help and explain to me why the hell i can't boot into the 64 bit USB but can boot into the 32 bit? Any help would be appreciated!

P.s I have also tried swtiching out the Ram and still no success.

Specs:

CPU - Intel i7-6700HQ

Memory - 8GB DDR4 2400MHz

Storage - 250GB M.2 SSD

GPU - Nvidia GTX 960M (4GB)

Can you please check in BIOS if SecureBoot is OFF.

Make sure the boot mode is UEFI and try changing the SATA Controller. (Is it AHCI or Intel RST ?)\

EDIT - Are you sure, you downloaded the correct windows ISO?

Hi, welcome to the community.

Your problem sounds strange. I always used the Microsoft Tool "Windows 10 installation media" to create the USB boot Flash drive.

Can you access the Y700 BIOS and see if there is any strange setting there. Also you may check if there is a "restore settings to factory" in the BIOS just in case.

My other wild guess will be to check the BIOS version and see if there is a new one on the Lenovo support site. But since I don't have your model, I'm not sure how to perform a BIOS update without an OS and a CD. The last version from the support site seems to be "CDCN54WW /6/25/2017"

If you suceed installing Windows, I always recommend installing Lenovo Companion to help you update the drivers of your Lenovo Machine.

Tried disabling secure boot. I don't have an option in BIOS to set to AHCI or RST. I tried Windows 10 x64 Home, Windows 10 Pro x64, Windows 8.1 x64 but same issue. Only boots with Windows 10 x86.

Hi

Is there a way to turn UEFI to legacy mode on the BIOS? Can you try that?

By anyways is very strange. Just in case produce a different USB boot flash drive, maybe with a different USB flash device.

haha, Kudos for ego boost. Sure Martin, here you go.

Also, I agree with Martin, this could be a USB issue or a windows image issue. I would suggest trying with another USB and differrent windows 10 image downloaded from reliable source.

I have tried using Windows Media Creation tool and still same problem. I have tried 3 different USB's. All USB ports on the laptop. I was up from about 9:30pm to 3:00am the next morning trying to fix the issue. The USB boots fine on my other laptop perfectly without an issue. I have tried UEFI boot, Legacy boot, Tried turning secure boot off. I read up and people also advised to turn Fast boot off so i did. In the end i have sent the laptop away for warranty. I will post here once i recieve notice as to what the cause was.

I also tried booting into a Linux x64 USB and same problem. Then i tried a Linux x86 and it booted. I think it has something to do with the AHCI or something because when i tried booting the Linux x64 it came up a verbose black screen and showed there was a problem with x2AHCI.

UPDATE #2

Lenovo sent the laptop back repaired but now my CPU has been downgraded to an i5-6300HQ (Originally an i7-6700HQ) & Backlit Keyboard is also not working. Also tried the Fn+Space Key. The laptop has the backlit keyboard because the sticker says it's Backlit and has the symbol on the spacebar. I honestly give up with Lenovo. They are also trying to say that the laptop had an i5-6300HQ when iy arrived to the repair center. I have pictures showing it had an i7 CPU. Waiting for the manager to call me back tomorrow to discuss further options and compensation for the major mistake that has been made.
