Y700 15ISK - Games worked before, now get Frame Drops frequently

2017-03-20, 14:36 PM

I currently have Y700.

Specs:

Win10 , 8GB RAM, i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.6GHz

Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M

I have multiple games on this computer. The Division, Far Cry Primal, RE: Biohazard, Rocket League, The Crew, and Most Recently, Ghost Recon Wildlands.

I have had this laptop for over 1 year, and have been able to run these games just fine on High or Very High Graphics settings up until the past few weeks. Most noticable, is Ghost Recon Wildlands. I have played about 50 hours on this game at Very High Graphics settings until recently and the game was running smooth. No issues, but recently my game has been skipping very frequently. I can get about 30-35fps when it is running smooth, but it will dip down to 5-12 for a second or two and then jump back up to 30-35. I have checked my GPU by using things like Afterburner and I get see the dip in GPU Core while the fps loss is happenning. I have tried multiple things but have run out of ideas. I have tried to remove the Dust cover from underneath the laptop where the fans intake is, but no improvement. My laptop has always ran pretty warm-hot when playing the games for a while.

Im just at a loss at to how it was working just fine for the longest, but now is giving issues. I have been considering getting a laptop cooling pad, to sit underneather the laptop, but im not sure that the heating is the problem, since it seems to have been the same temp this whole time. I dont want to spend the money on it, if it will not help improve. The temp is running between 60c-70c when running the games.

Any Ideas, would be appreciated.

I can recommend you two things

1) Reinstall windows, something may have messed up your windows installation

2)Open your laptop and clean the vents from dust, also reapply thermal paste to CPU and GPU because thermal throttling could be the cause of low FPS

Thanks for the Reply!

Do you have some instructions on where exactly the CPU is that I would need to apply the Paste on this Model? I did open the case and did clean out all the vents and fans, but did not see exactly where the CPU or GPU are located.

Re-Installing the Windows would have to be the VERY LAST RESORT at this point. I would like to think that if it was a windows issues, that there would be some test or repair that I could do that would fix it other than reinstalling windows.

CPU and GPU are under the heatsinks, follow the vent pipe, but if you are not familiar with the procedure it would be best not to mess with it. If you dont wish to reinstall windows then 1)do a virus scan 2)run a program like ccleaner and 3)Create a new user account and see if the problem still happens with the new account

P.S Dont forget to defrag your disk

I have done 1 & 2. I have also defragged my machine manually, but it is set on a scheduled defrag every week.

Last night I just tried to do a system restore to a date that was before I started having issues, but no success.

I am thinking of breaking down and buying a cooling pad. I hope that works.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried uninstalling the graphics drivers and installing an older/stable version?

Your temps are not too high, so I would hold off on buying a cooling pad for now. Try playing in an environment which is AC cooled and see the performance vs heat (temp).

Also, go into your BIOS and reset it to defaults.

Check that you are playing on High Performance mode.

Get into Power options > Change Advanced power settings -- and see that no power saving feature is turned On.

Just to add to Rocky's notes, try running Furmark and see if it is thermal throttling:

Run the GPU stress test. It should top out around 80°C, while maintaining 30fps (At least it does on my 17ISK).

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the current drivers, but not an older one. I am going to do that now.

I will also try and reset the BIOS.

I have checked the power settings and am running High Performance Mode.

In my opinion two things can cause poor performance:

1)Your thermal paste is dried out causing thermal throttling (could also be faulty heatsink but thats rare)

2)Your HDD is heavily fragmented. Windows defrag program is a joke, so don't trust it. Formatting would be the way to go. ( This could also indicate a failing HDD but thats a bit hard to diagnose)
