Y700-15ISK compatible with 1TB 2.5'' SSD ?

2016-04-01, 0:15 AM

Hi,

Does anybody knows if it's possible to replace the 5400rpm HHD by a 1 Tb SSD SATA III in the Y700 ?

I'm pretty sure it should work, but the only information I can find in the Hardware Maintenance Manual is "2.5-inch, 7 mm SATA III" at page 27. Because the laptop only comes with a 5400rpm HHD or HHD/SSD hybrid drive, there's no compatibility information available on normal SSDs in the Manual.

The only problem I could think is an incompatibility with the motherboard. In an other thread, I saw a case of someone who has burned his Asus Rog motherboard after he had put a too big (digital space in the drive) SSD in his laptop. I tryed unsuccessufully to find the motherboard model of the Y700, so I can't make a research on the compatibility.

I'm thinking about the Samsung 850 Evo 2.5'' 1TB. (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147374)

If anyone could help me out with that, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Baribo ,

Welcome to the Community Forums

Checking back with the hardware specification manual same page 27 : the options you have are as follows :

• 2.5-inch, 7 mm SATA III

• 500 GB / 1 TB, 5400rpm

• HYBRID 1 TB 5400rpm SSHD (8G)

SSD, NGFF, 128 GB / 256 GB / 512 GB  ( so upgrades for SSD M.2  128 GB / 256 GB / 512 GB are the ones recommended for the model)

Same upgrades on this discussion that you may review .

Our fellow community members have a good feedback to their upgrades .

From crucial review , but I rather stick with the hardware manual as this is tested by Lenovo engineers .

Hope this helps you on your upgrade.

Regards

Thanks for the fast answer. Unfortunately it doesn’t help me because I’ve already read all the threads you have on your site concerning the Y700. If I’ve precisely asked that question, it’s because no one has been able to answer it yet.

I understand that you can’t answer with certainty, since obviously your engineers didn’t consider relevant to ask the question. I guess they must judge the option of M.2 SSD 512 GB sufficient to meet the needs of most consumers, which in deed should be the case… But it still would have been nice to have had the choice between a SSD 2,5’’ or M.2, especially considering the appalling slowness of the HHD provided by Lenovo.

After everything I’ve read, I’ll probably opt for the M.2 Samsung EVO 850 500 GB (even if it’s not in the manual), which seems to be the most reliable and cheapest solution. In addition of not being findable in Canada, all the M.2 suggested in the Manual cost about 3-4 times the price of the EVO 850 and no information on their setup seems to be findable on the net.

In short, the question remains, so if someone has a positive result to share about installing a 1 TB SSD or bigger, don’t hesitate to inform us! I think we’ll have more success with the help of the community than by relying on the tech support (no offense, I know you do your best) or Lenovo engineers.

Thanks!

Hi Baribo ,

I was searching also for other guys that can confirm 1TB SSD on this model .

As a lenovo tech , we rather reference things from the engineers certified devices.

Like you , we can hope our community members to share their inputs to confirm it as how our forums have that advantage over the usual tech on the phones.

Thanks for understanding.
