Y700, Black Screen of Death

2016-02-10, 11:16 AM

Hi, I live in Macedonia and I bought the laptop less than a month ago. Just now when I tried to turn it on, the power indicator turns on, the battery is being used but the hard drive light is not flashing at all and the monitor shows absolutely nothing, not even the logo. What the hell? I want my money back if it's already having problems!

Hey, I managed to repair the issue - for now. What I did was allow the laptop sit in black screen, nonresponsive for an hour or two (didn't keep track of) and then I hard reset (by holding down the power button until it turns off the laptop). I turned the laptop back on and its functions were restored to normal. It works normally now, I only hope that this won't happen again. I kept the laptop unplugged in the meanwhile and allowed the battery to drain (to 38% when I turned the laptop back on and was able to check how much battery power was left).

Hi,

There's 4 lights at the front of the laptop, you should have the two left hand side lights on, power, and battery, these should be solid white, or the second light (battery) may be orange depending on the battery level.

Have you tried Fn key + up arrow? I.e. make sure brightness is all the way up? If so try the opposite (Fn key + down arrow) because I have a laptop that Windows 10 install made the brightness levels reversed.

If none of these work do you even get the Lenovo symbol during startup? If not and the laptop screen has never turned on then you have a dead unit and need to swap it our for a new one, contact the retailer for an RMA.

Cheers

Matt

If you don't see Lenovo loading page and if you don't hear any fan noise then you need to give it back to a shop for a refund or send it to repair... Couple of people had the same thing happening including me, nothing helped...

Re: Y700, Black Screen of Death

I loved the y700, the speakers, the aesthetics, the speed all wonderful. Until i got the now what i realize infamous black screen of death. In a single week i have had 3 of the same laptop so far this one seems to be working okay. If this one also gets this black screen i will never be buying any lenovo product again not that i would at this point anyway, unless lenovo comes up with an immediate fix such as sending me a new graphics card without me having to wait a month to get my brand new computer back (if thats even the problem). This should not happen especially three times in a row. Lenovo this is clearly a widespread issue and you need to fix it NOW. If its paying for every single person to get and install a brand new graphics chip so be it, that is the only way i will ever have any respect for this company again.

Re: Y700, Black Screen of Death

I have had this computer for 3 days, and I now have the black screen of death.  I wish I had googled the Y700 before purchasing it.  It is obviously a known problem.  I mean, only the keyboard will light up.  I am really disappointed because my previous laptop was a Lenovo and I loved it.  It is August, and I am seeing posts from 6 months ago stating this computer needed to be recalled.  :-(  I can get a refund for the laptop, but I purchased a service/damage plan, and I can't get a refund.

What version was your BIOS? Mine is CDCN54WW and it keeps on showing a black screen of death. I recall this happened when I was playing video and music and the speakers buzzed after the black screen. I suspect a battery or motherboard problem.
