After running my laptop for a short bit the screen has started to flicker a black screen. Not all the time. Intermittant. Seems like a video card issue. Does not seem to be overheating. Just goes black momenteraly. Any help out there. This is brand new y700-171SK laptop.

Welcome to the Community Forums.
It would be great if we have the Machine number for reference ( on the sticker , just keep your Serial number confidential) . You may also check the machine number here .
You may try this knowledge base and see if this would work :
You may also update the version of your Video driver here .
Update us how things go.

Hi. I am not sure what the machine number is but the lenova p/n is 80Q00010US and on the box there is a MO# PF9XB5C14177
I will compare the video driver to the one shown in the support file to see if it is differant.
This machine came with windows 10 preloaded so the knowledge base you linked me to does not apply.
Letr me know if the numbers i gave you are correct and if there is anything else you feel is more accurate to fix this.

Hi rk2024 ,
Does not matter if it's preloaded or upgrade. If you review on the documentation link , it would just guide you on basic step in disabling windows services that can trigger flickering of the display .
Using machine number 80Q00010US , Y700-17ISK for reference .
Try to update the NVDIA driver first, current is ver. 10.18.13.5362 and observe.
This is an intermittent issue , so basic troubleshooting would start if same flickering is observed in an external monitor and checking on the BIOS to isolate issue . Certainly would take time observing its behavior at this point.

Solution 1 -
Could you please click on START and type dxdiag. Check the BIOS version.
Select appropriate OS and install the latest BIOS and other drivers.
EDIT - Seems like there is no BIOS there in the list.
Solution 2 -
Please update your graphics drivers, both onboard and dedicated one. If you need detailed instructions, please let me know which GPU you have.
To check this, Click on Start and type Control Panel.
In Control Panel, click on Device manager. (If you dont see Device manager option, click on View By and select Small Icons)
In Device manager, go to Display Adapaters and see what all are displayed there.
Let me know if either of those fix it for you.
1) Could you please post when the flickering happens - Are you playing a game or just browsing?
2) Are you connected to power supply?
3) When you play games, do you play on battery or plugged in?
4) Do you have any external devices connected?

Last night i went into my device manager and i clicked on driver update for each and every item. Some needed it and some not. Only one i have not done yet is a bios update as i have yet to find it there is one.
This issue only happened once and it was while i was browsing working off of battery. Lasted about 10 minutes and flickered more than a dozen times during that 10 minutes. I have had this machine only for a month and this was the first time. Along with the vidoe drivers there were others that i updated so we will see how it works from here.If you can find the link for a bios update it would be great. This machine is only from oct 2015 but i am sue there could alreay be changes. It came with widnows 10 64bit.
Using your link i will verify that for those listed my machine has the same versions. Thanks

I cant find a BIOS update either.
Since you are on windows 10, it pushes all kinds of updates including graphics drivers (which I hate).
On my laptop (NOT Y700) I had the flickering too and it was down to some graphics drivers and finally a BIOS update from Lenovo. If you see the flickering again, please post back and we will try to get you a solution.
(Most probably it was bad drivers, which got triggered under some specific condition)
On the hardware side, it could be a loose video cable, but then flickering would happen each time you would move the laptop.

Well, You were unlucky too..
Don't try any solutions, because most probably it's the hardware problem.
Read this thread and my post.
I had the same issue, i've sent back the computer and asked for the new one. I got it, and now it's fine.

I appreciate your input. I have upgraded all my drivers via device manager and tjhere were many needing updated drivers. I was actually very surprised. A brand new machine needing so many driver updates. Anyhow since this flickering is intermittiant i will have to wait and hope that with all the various updates it will not reappear. I hope.
