Y700 Cold boot graphics problem, GTX 960M not detected

2016-02-03, 15:34 PM

Hi,

Having problems when bringing system back up from shutdown (cold boot). GTX 960M graphics is not found at all, have to reboot right away for it to be detected. No problems whatsoever after reboot.

Heres what I've tried so far to solve the problem;

  1. Reinstall all drivers, including graphics drivers
  2. Put fast boot from windows 10 settings to off
  3. Put fast boot from BIOS to off
  4. Reinstall Windows 10, clean install
  5. Reinstall Windows 10, with Lenovo software

Any ideas on solving the problem? Could this be BIOS update related like the "no display" -cases seen here lately? Lenovo solution center reports everything being OK, except for the "stress test" from GTX 960M.

Regards,

Jarmo, Finland

Welcome to the forums.

I am not sure about the reason for your issue, hence my recommendation would be to contact Lenovo support by Phone and send in your laptop for a repair. You should explain things to them in detail about the Cold boot issue.

Since this is the first time I am hearing about this issue, It could be an impending GPU failure or just a loose connection, cannot be sure until the laptop is looked at.

Thanks for the input.

An update on the problem;

Cold booting on battery power and quickly connecting the mains supply durin the Lenovo startup screen, the GTX 960M is detected correctly and working OK.  It seems pretty weird if you ask me, some kind of power problem?

I have installed an M.2 SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256GB), hope this wont void my warranty?

As long as you did not leave any visible marks on the laptop back cover, your warranty should be fine. In the end, it depends on the technician to decide about the warranty. If there is a problem and you explain to them, I dont think there should be an issue. (This is my personal experience)

I am not an electronics guy, so cannot comment on the battery or the power supply, but it very well could be a reason. Have you had any problems charging the laptop?

What is your power setting?

Do you play games on battery or Power supply?

Usually, the power supply is a CRU, you can ask for another power supply from Lenovo and say that this one seems to be faulty. They should send it to your home.

Here is the manual -

https://us.download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_y700-15_17isk_15acz_touch-15isk_hmm_201510.pdf

Check Pg 21 and 22 for some basic information on checking the health of battery and power supply.

1) Do try to remove  the battery and only power On while connected to power suppky (If your battery is removable)

See how it performs.

2) If you ONLY power up on Battery, does it detect the GPU?

Also, if you do decide to send it in for repairs, you can take out the SSD. (since it was not part of original configuration)

Had no problems charging, even when during heavy loading (gaming) the battery is recharging. I game only on power supply. Power setting is high performance (no hibernation, HDD shutdown etc).

Battery is non-removable (without removing the back cover). There is a connector which can be unplugged as described on HMM page 38. I'll try that later on.

I will test your other suggestions tomorrow. I must point out that by "cold boot" I mean system being shut down for more than 1 hours or so. Shutdown and powering back on before 1 hour has passed has no problems. So testing is a bit time-consuming.

My guess is when powering up on battery has no problems, I'll post results on that later.

Re: Y700 Cold boot graphics problem, GTX 960M not detected

I am having the exact problem as described right out the box, however, I can't perform any series of steps where this happens 100% of the time other than it happened every day when I booted after leaving the computer off for a period of time (of more than 4 hours)

I have tried:

- Installing latest nvidia provided drivers.

- Disabling the intel integrated graphics. (This will also disable the HDMI output)

- Updating the intel integrated graphics via Device Manager (This changed the symptom of no nvidia graphics on cold boot to black screeen on cold boot. Restart always corrected the problem.)

- Talking to support (They are no help as I expected)

I have no idea what causes this but here is my solution:

Disable the windows fastboot (or fast start.) This is not an ideal workaround but I can live without fastboot if it means the nvidia graphics is always available on cold boot.

I have not encountered this issue since disabling the fastboot.

To disable the fastboot:

1. Go to power options, then click additional power settings.

2. Click on "Choose what the power button does" on the left.

3. Under shutdown settings, un-check the fast startup option.

4. Win! Kick tail! Repeat!

Oops I just saw that you tried disabling fastboot.

Try updating your drivers for the intel integrated graphics via the Device Manager. I'll warn you your screen may turn black shortly after doing this update. Just restart and you should be ok.

Hi there. Still having the problem...

I had updated integrated graphics drivers before. According to device manager the driver version is 20.19.15.4364 (dated 6.1.2016).

I'll give fast boot another go.

Also found out lately that unplugging the mains supply for a brief moment and plugging it back in before pressing the power button, the problem does not occur. So it seems that either the power supply is faulty or theres something fishy going on in power management or something.

Guess I spoke too soon. Upon booting today, the nvidia card is not active.

Device manager shows a problem with the nvidia graphics saying "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

Looking up that code says to uninstall the affected item, then scan for hardware changes.

I spoke to a friend of mine who is a computer hardware genius and explained the problem. He said it is most likely a defect in the motherboard or the nvidia graphic card that would cause this problem. He advised me to exchange the laptop since mine is only a week old.

The place we bought it is 150 mi away and we planning to go back there next week so I think I will exchange it for another one.

Update just in case someone is having this problem.

Newest BIOS fixed this behaviour, I'm guessing it was this that did the trick;

  2) Fixed issue of system restart in POST code 41 when power cycle is not stable.

Thanks Lenovo for the fix!
