Hi, I want to upgrade my Y700 and put in an SSD. When I took out all of the screws in the back of the laptop, I had trouble prying off the back cover. Are there any tricks / tools I should use to get the job done?

As a guide try looking at the assembly/disassembly procedures in the hardware maintenance manual.

You should definitely look at the Hardware Maintanance Manual (HMM) but from personal experience - If the Y700 is anything similar to the earlier Y series, then the first time popping out of the cover is a bit difficult.
Keep prying slowly without putting excess pressure on either side and it should come off.
Make sure you have all screws off and the locks (if any) are in unlocked position.

Is it like the backlid for the y50-70 where you first tilt the bottompart up and slide forward?

I would'nt bother looking for another way of doing things for your unit by looking for the procedure in another model. This is just a waste of time and for all you know later on it is different. You have the manual and that is the official way of doing it. You may do it by looking for the procedure for the same model but definitely not for a different model.

I had to open mine *twice* for RAM and HDD upgrade and yes, you have to tilt the cover and then push back, but the tabs holding it are (were) very stiff as if the edge was glued. I used a flat metal prying tool that I had ordred from amazon and even with that it was still a b!tch to get the back side off. Second time opening, it was easier. I miss the old days where you simply unscrew a cover for RAM and slide out the HDD tray
