Y700 SSD Speed dramatically decreases with CDCN53WW BIOS

2017-02-20, 19:25 PM

Hi,

In order to solve some problems that i thought were caused by the BIOS of my laptop (Y700-17ISK) i've upgraded my BIOS version from CDCN25WW to CDCN53WW with no problems in the process, but i've notice that with this newer version of the BIOS my Samsung 960EVO M.2 SSD is slower than ever. This BIOS version has decreased the speed of the M.2 port more than 50%. I've attached some pics that prooves the difference from one BIOS to another. I've tried to reflash my BIOS to CDCN35WW that is avaliable in the support download center, but it returns an error when it's trying to reflash the BIOS (YES, i've got admin privileges, i've executed the program as administrator and i've activated the flashback option in the BIOS).

My question is: Where i can find the CDCN25WW BIOS for my laptop and how i can flashback to it?

Thank you in advance.

Hello juanjo_dante

Thanks for joining the forums.

Unless you have created a backup, there will not really be an option to flash back your BIOS, sorry.

You should however be able to find your newest versions on Lenovo support site, see if that helps.

Hope this help you, let us know how you get on

Re: Y700 SSD Speed dramatically decreases with CDCN53WW BIOS

Hi Krakken, thanks for your reply, but i expected a better solution from Lenovo. The Latest BIOS avaliable for my laptop (CDCN53WW) is the one that presents the problem that i'm experiencing on the m.2 port speed. I found a topic in this forum where so many users are experiencing speed problems in the M.2 port (the're not so f*cked as me, but they've got his port also capped) and from one day to another the topic has gone from your forums since one user achieved some progress modifying his BIOS and solves the problem. Is there any wrong with that? Why Lenovo Capped his M.2 port Speed in the Y700 models? Why Lenovo didn't contact that user, ask him for the mod and launch a new BIOS upgrade? Seriously there isn't a CDCN25WWBIOS file that i can use to reflash my BIOS and RECOVER SOME of the Speed that i've lost upgrading to the Latest BIOS firmware? This is my first Lenovo product and this is really dissapointing..

I am not part of Lenovo, so am unable to comment on their exact procedures, but I believe they simply don't provide older versions of the BIOS, not exactly sure why, as such in your case, this would prove greatly useful.

If you would like more info on this issue you can call your local Lenovo support line, they may be able to help you provide the exact disclaimer on this. Below is the link to the phone list where you can find these numbers.

Hope this help you, let us know how you get on

Hello juanjo_dante,

Apart from the solution that Redstorm provided (which will obviously remove the speed cap of the M.2 port)

you can try and leave the M.2 disk to do some internal work.

What i mean is, leave the ssd do the TRIM job and do not run consequent benchmarks.

A second thought is that when you run again a speed benchmark, try a more serious and consistent one, like the AS-SSD or the Anvil tool.

Re: Y700 SSD Speed dramatically decreases with CDCN53WW BIOS

Hi everyone, I've finally solved completely my problem. The first thing i did was your recommendation felix_w , and i tried the Crystal Disk Performance Benchmark, obtaining this results:

As you can see the reading speeds were insanely faster than before, but there's still a big problem with the writing speeds, so reviewing my system i remembered that before connecting the SSD for the first time i've installed a Samsung NVME Driver to ensure the correct working of the SSD unit, so i decided to repair the installation of that Driver because maybe that was the cause, the malfunction of the NVME Driver for some unknown reason. I did that obtaining the same results as before.

Finally after that test i've decided to directly uninstall the Samsung NVME driver and try to run the Benchmark without the Driver and surprisingly i've obtained this AWESOME results:

So the problem was also the Samsung NVME drivers. Now i'm using the Microsoft NVME Driver included in Windows 10 as you can see in the next picture of Samsung Magician:

Thank you everyone for your responses, specially to Redstorm for his support helping me to edit the hidden BIOS parameter. I hope this topic help other people with my same problem. Kudos for all of you!

Greetings!

Hey Redstorm, do you think I should update to CDCN53WW prior to following your guide? I'm on CDCN35WW (Y700-15ISK).

Well, to anyone reading this thread, I went ahead anyway.

Here's my performance increase on a 960 EVO.

Thanks Redstorm!
