Y720 Windows reinstall on a new ssd walktrough?

2017-12-26, 14:18 PM

So I bought this Y720 laptop with only a HDD inside and with an already installed and activated Windows 10 copy, and every driver and additional software installed too. My question is: can I find a walkthrough somewhere or can anybody please write one for installing an SSD? It would be nice to know every step from installing the SSD, preparing to install windows (where to download, how to install), how to activate windows on the new SSD (is there an activation code somewhere on the HDD?), where to find all the needed drivers and additional lenovo software already installed on the HDD and any other info that maybe I can't think of, but is needed to complete this upgrade. Thank you so much for your help! :)

Hi giorgioblues,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can start by checking your upgrade options physically on your model.

Here is the hardware manual with the steps how to remove and install parts.

Page 37 show SSD and HDD replacements. Service training module here.

Are you planning on making the SSD the primary drive using an m.2 PCIe SSD or replacing the current SATA HDD with a SATA SSD? The manual would allow you to check your upgrade slots.

You can create your recovery media or download an image of Windows to clean install.

Drivers and applications are available here as other application would also be at the Microsoft store.

OEM Activation would be automatic as long as same version that came with the machine is used. Product key is embedded on systemboard chip.

Included links for full reference on other steps.

Take your upgrade plans a step at a time.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

I'm planning to install an M.2 PCIe SSD as the new primary drive and using the already present HDD as storage. Does that mean any additional tinkering with the BIOS or something? If yes is it also described in the hardware manual?

Hi giorgioblues,

Greetings.

Access the BIOS using the Novo button (item 12 page 58) while it is off.

This will show option to access the BIOS (or FN + F2) on restart.

Once you have the M.2 PCIe installed, the BIOS should show and changing the boot mode making boot priority available. Then save and exit.

Start with reviewing the hardware manual and module for the hardware parts.

Then you can proceed creating a recovery image as directed above.

Choose you upgrade SSD of choice and then you can decide if clean install of Windows would be best for you on the SSD or just to place your frequently accessed program / file and use the speed of the SSD more than just for booting with it.

You may always check with us here on our community at anytime.

Regards
