Y740-15IRHg RAM upgrade

2020-04-09, 17:34 PM

I own a brand new Y740-15IRHg (15inch, NVIDIA RTX2070 max-Q, 16gb RAM and Core i7-9750H). I would like to upgrade its RAM to 32 gigs, but as 16gb rams are expensive I can only afford one at a time (looking at a 16 gb Crucial DDR4-2666 MHz RAM). I was wondering if it's ok to change one right now and then the other in a couple of months, or if that would have any negative effect on performance. Like, will it work fine with 24gb RAM for a while before upgrading to the final 32gb?

Thanks!

Y740-15IRHg RAM upgrade

Yes you can run just 1 ram stick. Check your motherboard manual as to which slot to use (usually the one closest to the cpu). The preferred option for performance is to have 2x8gb sticks of ram. By getting 1x16GB stick, you lose around 5–10% cpu performance, which isn’t ideal, but its not the end of the world either.
