Y740 Bricked

2021-02-11, 17:57 PM

My just over 1 year old Y740 i79750h with 2060 is now bricked. Completed the BIOS update after it said it needed it, rebooted and it was fine ok from the fans being on full speed constantly and having no control over them with 3rd party apps. The Lenovo Diagnostics service said no fan detected.

I reached out to support and followed the advice, cleaned the fans, reset bios to default and reinstalled windows. Still the same, constant speed fan with no control.

I reached out to support again and they sent me the bios to flash it back to the previous version. Ran this and now it doesn't even post.

I get a screen which says;

Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Series 2.60 (06/04/14)

PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable

PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM

I've checked all connections in the laptop, removed hard drives and all connected devices, cleared CMOS multiple times and nothing makes a difference.

I've tried all f keys with fn variations, I've tried FN+R and I've tried the pin hole reset button, again nothing works.

I've tried to create a bootable USB but again I just get the same screen which I cannot get around.

Ive tried the Crisis Recovery but the program doesn't detect any of my USB sticks, I've also tried normal bootable USB's but when I extract the .exe there is no .fd file or .wph file. This is using innoextracter. I can't run the installer to extract it manually because I have to do it on another computer and it says that the bios is not compatible then closes.

Currently waiting for Lenovo to get back to me, but would welcome any ideas, Lenovo wanted to charge me to send it back but considering it's not my fault, I am hoping I won't have to do this.

Hello @AjR6,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I would recommend accessing the BIOS and turning of the PXE Boot to lan and PXE First in the boot tab.

You can use this link to learn more about accessing the BIOS https://support.lenovo.com/th/th/solutions/HT500216

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Jack_Lenovo1

Hello @AjR6,

Thanks for writing back.

I missed that detail since you are unable to access the BIOS the motherboard you may have to contact support for a repair since bricked motherboards that can no longer access the BIOS often need replacement.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I hope it isn't something they expect me to pay for. Since posting this I have come across quite a few where the new Bios has ended up with their machines also being bricked.

Hello @AjR6,

Thanks for writing back.

Were you able to take note of the BIOS version that caused this?

Sure, the most recent version BVCN15WW v1.11, and the previous version I was sent to flash the bios back was BVCN14WW V1.10 i think (no longer have access to the hard drive to check...)
