Y910 Internal HDD disconnects / disappears

2018-10-18, 17:46 PM

Hello Everyone
I'm experiencing "random" HDD disconnections, already sent my laptop for warranty 3 times and every time I got back a new Y910 laptop with this same issue.

At first, I wasn't even able to play decently because I only had the internal HDD and because all my games were installed there, whenever I tried playing heavy games like Dark Souls III the game would crash due to the HDD getting disconnected.

This random disconnection does not exclusively occur while playing video games, sometimes it will just happen by doing regular tasks like writing text files or opening Visual Studio.

I already tried using a new different HDD but the issue persists. Sometimes a reboot is not enough and I have to physical re-connect the HDD so that the BIOS recognizes it.

I bought a SSD and started using it for everything, this SSD was installed in one of the two PCIe slots available for this model and it has not presented any issue so far. This is the only way I've managed to use the laptop decently but I recently found that is not a good idea to keep highly accessed files in the SSD like regular documents because this kind of disks are supposed to have a lifespan related with a limited number of reads/writes which will end way sooner if you keep using it to store your daily documents. This is why having the HDD working is so important to me.

I don't really want to send my laptop back to the warranty again because it is very time consuming and I use it for work.

I don't believe this is an isolated problem because I found a couple of articles in this forum that describe the same problem and even a youtube video that shows the Game Issue I've talked about ( although I'm not 100% the video happens because of the same HDD disconnection problem).

The two articles that refer to the IdeaPad Y700 model mention that a BIOS update was released for it that fixed the problem. Maybe the Lenovo Team can take a look into this patch and implement the same solution for the Lenovo Y910 model?

Lenovo, help me out, please. I've been seriously thinking on reclaiming a refund because having such an expensive gaming model ( it is expensive for me) with this kind of problem is very disappointing.

Here are the links to the articles and youtube video I mentioned, hopefully, you can conclude this is not an isolated problem and may address it soon:

If you have a BIOS update that you can do that might solve the issue, but updating BIOS can lead to other issues.

If you have a SATA SSD drive, try plugging that one in to see if it presents the same issue.

And did you say they kept sending you a replacement laptop? Or they send you the same one but "fixed"?

Either case, the connector might be the issue. Have you taken a close look at it? You can buy another connector cheaply I think and try it out.

Lots of options here, but I think it might be easier simply to get a new model.

This helped me too

I have EXACTLY the same issue and i´m little bit pissed off.. They already replaced my laptop with new one and the problem occured again.. Idk why but it seems to me that the whole Y910 model lineup is trash and lenovo knows it that´s why they stopped selling it and now you see Y720 and Y530 everywhere even though the Y910 has better hardware.. Looking forward to solve this issue, btw dear Lenovo.. if you´re selling laptop at price over 1000€ you better upgrade that crappy old looking BIOS, or just add more functionality to it because it kills that laptop.. thanks

I ended up sending my laptop one extra time, and this time they changed the HDD connector along with the MOBO.. To be honest, it seems like it was about the HDD connector, and I saw you can buy it for about 15 USD @ ali express in case anyone is wondering.

Anyways, thank you for the reply! :D
