legion y540 ram upgrade

2019-07-27, 11:49 AM

I just wanted to ask to be  sure.  So i want to buy the Lenovo legion y540 laptop with rtx 206, i5 9300H, and 8 GB of ram but once get it i immediately want to upgrade my ram to atleast 16 GB. I found a 16gb ram compatible with the laptop (Crucial SO-DIMM 16GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16 Ballistix Sport LT)  so i would have 24 gb of ram  but I am not sure if it won't cause any issues that i will have 1 stick with 8 gb and 1 with 16 gb. Does someone know more about this ? thanks for any help and info

It should be fine. Just know that the slower ram

'will set the pace' if it's not 2666mhz. As in, if you have a 2333mhz both will be at the same freq.

This helped me too

FYI: I bought Ballistix Sport LT SODIMM, but it made the system unstable and crashed Windows numerous times (I returned it to the store). Here are the timings that I got from using it vs the SODIMM that came with the system (8 GB Samsung) and the new ones that I'm now using which are stable (HyperX Impact).

thanks for the pictures, i have the Crucial Ballistics 2666 cl16 LT installed and its only running at 2400 cl16 just like your picture.

however it seems stable, just wish i could get it to run at its rated speed of 2666 maybe we can get a bios update to fix this or give us a manual ram setting in the bios that would be awesome.

does anyone know the fastest rated ram that works in the y540-17IRH is 2666 the fastest that shows up?

Does this mean that you would need to change the current RAM to the HyperX Impact (to have 2 Hyper X like in your example) or could you keep the current Samsung 8GB and add the HyperX Impact 16GB in the second slot? Thanks!

If you take only one HyperX Impact ram module then it will run slower because samsung will  it slow down to CL19.

Thanks !!!

The 2nd RAM slot try installing the earlier samsung RAM which was provided with the laptop in that sot and see if it is working or not. If it does not work Simply return the laptop as it is a defected piece

Good day.

Sorry about the late reply. I didn't notice it until this morning.

It's strongly recommended that you do not mix memory.

At best, it'll run at the speed of the slowest memory. At worst, it'll cause system instability and crash. (I've also read claims that it can damage hardware, but I'm unsure if that's true or false. It was true back in the 1990s, but that was 30 years ago.)

Take care!
