y700 not connecting to wifi

Yesterday my son bought a Y700.  It wouldn't connect to our wifi unless it was literally within 5' of the router.

We returned it to Best Buy today and exchanged it for a new one.  The customer service rep said it was probably a bad wireless card.

We got the new one home and the same problem happens.  It will start to connect, then lose the connection.  Or not make any connection at all.  Plus, there's a warning on the hardware scan, "Local Connection Test....warning."

I doubt it's a problem with our internet connection or router, because people use iPhones and other laptops in the house and don't have any problems wtih connections.

If there's not a simple solution, we're just gonna give up on the whole Lenovo laptop idea.

Re: y700 not connecting to wifi

Well, for what it's worth....we returned the second machine for a refund.

No more Lenovo for us.

We'll shop around.

Re: y700 not connecting to wifi

Old router may not have the latest certified 11n spec's unless the router firmware was upgraded. If 11g is turned off then there is no other mode to connect with. The problem is Lenovo don't provide full build spec's on there notebooks. You  don't know what WiFi controller or NIC is provided until you get it. Mine is pretty basic and don't support 450Mb/sec mode as my othe older one does. Nor can I control which mode I will use in the driver. Its not an Intel WiFi controller and the number of antenna make a difference. Cheap controllers used.

Re: y700 not connecting to wifi

No idea what your problem might be as there is no info on what you've done, tested, mode your wifi is configured for etc.

You need to do some testing and determine which area the problem lies. Router can also be the problem but its crap shoot right now. Take it to a Coffee shop with wifi and see if it works there.

Re: y700 not connecting to wifi

That's the thing:  I know a little bit about how to do this stuff, but not enough to get into the details.  And I shouldn't have to.  I should be able to buy a computer, take it home, follow the set-up wizards, and be good to go.

As for taking it to different wifi locations: can't have done that because I wanted to return it, not haul it around to test if it were my wifi or the computer.

I returned it the next day.  It may have been the router. We have since replaced the router because it failed.   But I'm not willing to spend the time to try yet another Y700 and then return it when it doesn't work out of the box.

All that being said, I have a Lenovo desktop at work and have never had a problem with it. (however, we do have professional IT staff to take care of problems).

Re: y700 not connecting to wifi

Desktop is entirely different beast. Nothing really propriety.

What mode you connnect at or attempt to such as 11n can be a problem because old routers did not get upgraded to the final spec's (user firmware upgrade process was required.)

I don't know your options and or you purpose for it. I would look at HP or Dell as alternatives. There are a number of people with WIFi trouble with the Y700 for some reason.

Re: y700 not connecting to wifi

I manage to connect to WIFI instantly when i bring laptop close half meter to router. Then i go away in other rooms signal stays ok, strongest. But if i restart windows 10, disconnect from network, or put laptop to sleep it wont connect again until i go back close to router with it. So i dont want to live near the router Smiley Happy

I was thinking to buy usb wifi adapter to try but i didnt pay this money for something to not work on this y700.

So could this still be windows problem or wireless card ? How hard is to replace it myself do i lose warranty if i do it or i must send to service and wait days to repair, thanks all

Re: y700 not connecting to wifi

Identical problem here with wifi connection.  I have, as you suggested, hooked up a USB wifi antenna, and it is working well (although not ethernet speed) showing good wifi connection (now "wifi 2")  It's close enough of a solution as not to consider returning my Y700.  Will I buy a Lenovo again????  Very doubtful.............
