Are Lenovo ThinkPads the same as IBM ThinkPads ??

2008-03-17, 23:33 PM
Are the Lenovo ThinkPads still the same as the old good ThinkPads. Is IBM still responsible for manafacturing the parts inside the ThinkPad or Lenovo is doing the Job under IBM's supervision ??

thinkpads from lenovo are still as good as the ones made ubder the ibm logo..
for the past 4 to 5 years all thinkpads have been made in chinese factories and designed at yamato in japan since the very early thinkpad models..
the new X300 is as good as any past thinkpad.. and it is a 100% lenovo creation AFAIK..

ibm never made ALL the parts inside a thinkpad..
no maker makes all or even some of the parts in ANY laptop..
parts are more or less universal..
hitachi, fujitsu, et al make the HDD's..
intel makes the cpu's..
and so on..

and i don't think ibm is hanging over the shoulder of lenovo watching what lenovo is doing..
ibm is happy to be rid of the PC division as they were happy to sell off the storage division..

ibm wants to concentrate on what they do best..
making big mainframes and service..
and going into more service oriented business..
IMO ibm did not run the PCD well from the aspect of a consumer..
they wanted to sell to large enterprises more than individuals..

hopefully, lenovo will market the thinkpad brand better than ibm did..
so far, so good..
from what i see they are doing things ibm never would or could do..

The quality is still great. In my view, the only difference is price! Today, you can get a good T61 for under $1,000.

Back in the day, my A20M had cost $5,000, and even my T42 had cost $3,900.

MacBook Pro, with an aluminum unibody enclosure **As of September 15, 2008, our company has completely switched to Apple. Having used ThinkPad products for over 10 years, we had desperately tried to find just one reason to continue using these products, to no avail. We are of the view that ThinkPads are no longer premium products. We wish you the best of luck with your ThinkPad! Happy computing…**

I truly believe Lenovo ThinkPads are better than the IBM ThinkPads of recent years, quite simply, Lenovo have to be better to gain credibility, the T60 was far better designed than the T40, the X60 was in a different league from the X40 (worst ThinkPad ever! imho) and the X300 is arguably the best ThinkPad ever in terms of build quality and design.

Lenovo only care about the PC business so it has to succeed for them, IBM viewed the PC business as a hindrance in recent times as it wasn't as lucrative as their charge people for nothing.............erm............services business and I believe they got complacent as a result - just look at the T40, while it looked to be a much better designed ThinkPad versus the T30, I have never experienced a ThinkPad model to have so many problems (solder crack being the main offender).

Re: Are Lenovo ThinkPads the same as IBM ThinkPads ??

I've worked at IBM/Lenovo for almost 31 years.  When Lenovo bought the PC Division from IBM, they bought it ALL, from the General Manager to the people who tape the cartons on the end of the assembly lines.  Today we have the same managers, designers, engineers, assembly line people, fulfillment people, service & support people, procurement people, Quality people, etc. that we had when we were IBM... (except for normal movement and attrition).

Snife is right that today's Thinkpads are the best ever, but I'm not at all sure it can be attributed entirely to IBM vs Lenovo.  I think we're seeing a continuation of the product evolution due to technology, experience, continuous improvement programs, etc.  Our quality targets and performance are tighter today than they were last year, and they will be tightened again next year.  It has been true every year since our PCs had an 8086 uproc and no hard drive... and it did not change when we became Lenovo.

In the days of the first PCs, we measured defects in %, (parts per hundred).  Today we measure defects in PPM, (Parts Per Million).  The low-hanging fruit is gone.  Today I'm not working on a 3% problem.  I'm working on a 30PPM problem.  It is why you see the attention afforded to individuals in places like this forum.  In the old days, (before the web), chances are most of you would never hear about the 3% problem.  Today, the 30PPM problem is talked about on a hundred sites.

I can only assure you that the Thinkpad quality numbers have improved every year, they continue to show an improving trend, and we continue to push them.  Yes, Charlotte, (for you older folks), our Thinkpads today are the best they have ever been.

Thanks,
I DO work at Lenovo
30 years at IBM/Lenovo... so far

Isn't the Thinkpad line being discontinued in favour of the IdeaPad?

Heard this from IBM employees in Markham a year ago and now IdeaPads are showing up on the site for sale.

Stranger things have happened, but I would be very surprised if this was true.

Then who owns the Thinkpad trademark now then?

I was under the impression that name was only on loan to Lenovo for the first 3 years of manufacturing then they would have to pay IBM for the name if they wanted to continue to use it.

...I've been wrong before though but we'll see
