Chrome browser: Website downloads music file instead of playing automatically

I used to go to this website and the music automatically played without anything else needing to be opened.

Recently, whenever I go to this site, a mp3 file downloads to my computer and I need to click on it for the music to play. When I click on it, a small Windows Media player opens.

Now I have all these mp3 files downloaded on my computer.

I don't know of any changes I made to my browser that would cause this.

I am guessing I can change a setting to prevent the download and have the music automatically play, but don't know what.

The site is for a restaurant so it should be safe.

Re: Chrome browser: Website downloads music file instead of playing automatically

i just tried it in firefox 4.0 and it plays background music.   my guess would be that chrome can't properly handle embedded music and is instead giving you the option to download the music source file.

the source code on the website for the music file appears as follows:

<img src="images/MusicOffOn.gif">&nbsp<embed src="music.mp3"
width=25 height=25 autostart=true repeat=true loop=true> </embed>

try a different browser like firefox or internet explorer and see if the issue persists.

Re: Chrome browser: Website downloads music file instead of playing automatically

In my Chrome install the QuickTime plugin automatically plays the mp3. To see whether you have the Quicktime plugin installed, and whether it's enabled, go to aboutSmiley Tonguelugins. Also make sure Chrome is set to auto-open mp3's - when the mp3 file downloads, click the down arrow and select "Always open files of this type".

Hope this helps!

When I selct "Always open files of this type" it does play automatically.  However, a file is still being downloaded to my computer.

If I use Quicktime, will it still download a file?

I went to about;plugins (By the way, look what appeared in your post.  A face with its tounge out because abou;plugins has ";p") and Quicktime is not installed.

Where do I get that plug in?

If you have the Quicktime plugin the mp3 for the test site you linked to streams in the background. The plugin installs when you install Quicktime.

Re: Chrome browser: Website downloads music file instead of playing automatically

Hey JWBlue,

Could you do me a favor?

1. Uninstall Chrome

2. Download Chrome and reinstall

3. If you do not have quicktime, download and install it from www.apple.com/quicktime

After that, launch Chrome and open up - http://www.romancucina.com/index3.htm

and the music part should look like what is circled in the attachment.
