Lenovo Outlet product listings frustrating

2008-05-25, 3:01 AM
I'm looking at T61s from the Lenovo Outlet due to the fact that SXGA+ screens are not being offered in new models anymore. I need something with a discrete graphics card, and would prefer a T61p with the Quadro FX570M card. However, for many of the offered units, the Lenovo Outlet does not list which graphics card the unit has. When I call their sales team they cannot provide me with any more information for some reason. And while the serial number of the unit is provided the type is not (ie 8891, 8897, etc.) so I cannot run the system through the Lenovo parts lookup site to see what the machine's specs are. Has anyone had similar experiences with the outlet site? Also if anyone could tell me if it is possible to look up specs from only the serial number I would greatly appreciate it.

Welcome to the forum!

Here's the reverse lookup, if you want to call it that way: with a model number (say 6465) and the serial, go to this page:

The answer you'll get on the next page will include the model specific code (say 1AU), so you can follow up by going here:

and entering your full 7-character code (say 6465-1AU) and you'll see the exact model with full specs on the next page.

BTW, I've just ran the few most expensive ones (from the "new" part of the Outlet, 8892 is the model number) and they're all regular (although hi-end) T61s...

Hope this helps.

How could you tell that they're 8892s? I noticed that the Outlet's information tells you that they're 889x models, but when you change the last digit and run it through the parts lookup, you get different results for the same serial number. I would have expected that the serial numbers would line up with only one model code, but they don't.

Oh and I assume 8892 is a T61 with the NVS140M discrete graphics? Is there a listing of what the different model numbers represent anywhere? I know 8891 seems to be a T61p, but not much else.

Well...a little creativity is required here: you have 889x and a serial. I've owned a 8892 unit and tried this first on a couple of them, getting the results, the others were 8891/8890 and were not "p" models. You basically have 10 possible combinations, but most of them won't work...also, look for the "location" of the warranty, I've gotten Germany and Singapore as possible results, and that is quite unlikely on the machine that is being offered in the U.S.

I completely agree that this is not a bullet-proof approach, but is better than nothing, at least in my opinion, when you can't get the straight answer out of Outlet reps...

Good luck.
Cheers,

George

That's been my approach as well, to just try different numbers and see if the specs match those listed on the outlet web site. Is there any resource that lists what each number signifies (like is an 8891 always a T61p, and an 8892 always a T61 with discrete graphics)?

I don't believe so, because both 8891 and 92 came back as regular T61 units...the machines on the Outlet site, that is...

T61p can be one of those (14" SXGA+) : 8889, 8890, 8891, 8892, 8939...

Good luck...
