Lenovo computers and Microsoft SCCM?

2010-08-31, 5:54 AM

We have a big IT park with all Lenovo machines. Our deployment tool is Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager. A mouthful but otherwise called SCCM.

For the installation of the OS we use the OSD feature in the tool and therefor we are using some Lenovo tools.

To make it better I would like to have some administrators who are using the tool for OS deployment too and give me some advice to optimize my procedures.

For now I use for my laptops (only) these tools:

  • Lenovo System Interface Driver
  • Ultranav Driver
  • Ultranav Utility
  • Power Manager
  • Thinkpad Power Management
  • Thinkvantage Access Connections
  • Hotkey Features Integration
  • Presentation Director
  • Thinkvantage GPS
  • Thinkvantage Productivity Center Pack
  • Thinkvantage Communication Utility

What can I use for the desktops?

That is a first idea but I want just want the necessary tools for a laptop. Things like DVD software are useless on business machines.

it lets you pick the ones you want to install if you don't want something installed don't check that box and it won't install

We use www.smartdeploy.com enterprise product along with SCCM to deploy Lenovo devices. The smartdeploy people provide driver package templates for Lenovo that makes it really easy to manage. Updates can be done in minutes and driver management is much, much simpler than OSD natively. It's worth a look, at least.
