Moderators using older models?

[ Edited ]

i am new here, but i just noticed that many of the moderators use older models of ThinkPads (ThinkPads going back from the #61 series) One would think that the moderators would have the latest and greatest.

3 part question to any moderator/Guru:

Is there a specific reason that you do not like the new models - T500/400, W500, W700, X200/300?

When do you plan to upgrade?

What model catches your eyes right now?

Hey, thanks for your thoughts!

CuriousPete

Welcome to the forum!

The moderators are not Lenovo employees, however we are long-time ThinkPad fans for the most part.  Like many other forum members, you'll see a variety of models in our sig lines from the very oldest hanger queens that we keep because of nostalgia to the some of the newer models.  Check my sig line for my current line-up!

Re: Moderators using older models?

thanks very much!

so of your  X300, X200 Tablet, X61 Tablet, T60p ThinkPads - which is your favorite and most used?

i'm currently considering an X300 and an X200 - Seems like an X200 is faster and can have a much bigger HDD

your thoughts?

thanks in advance

Re: Moderators using older models?

Some people, not just Mods, are only doing Office, Media, Internet, etc, which a Pentium M or older, is certainly capable of doing.

Re: Moderators using older models?

Although I'm not a moderator, my almost 9 year old A21p is still going strong. It's a bit slow, mostly because of the 512MB max RAM limitation, and still useful for light surfing, e-mail, as a backup system and to provide a floppy drive on the rare occasions I need one. They don't make them as solidly today like they made the A-series ThinkPads.

In which threads have mods / gurus said they didn't like the new models? That is a very presumptive and provocative statement. I think you need to explain why you felt you had to ask this question omitting linking to posts where this is stated and is plain for all to see.

As you clearly have spent a long time in (observing) this forum you will be aware of the changes in my signature over the last 16 months.

I use my T43 mostly because it's 4:3 format which I prefer, (please don't start a new discussion on this topic, it's been discussed to death and I promise to lock / delete the thread), but will probably replace it with a new system sometime this year and learn live with the 16:10 format. The 16:10 format isn't Lenovo's fault - Fact.

I've played with all of the "new" models since the 600 to the W700, I think they are all good systems and each has it's own unique characteristics which fit different users' needs.

Which model catches my eye right now? I'm posting this from my T23, decided to give it a bit of exercise which still fulfills all my needs if required. I consider the X301 to be best suited to my needs today. Having said that, because I have always purchased the fastest and fattest at the time, the W700 is really tempting because it is such a wickedly fast machine offering absolutely everything which I don't need, but is nice to brag about having one.

In all honesty, I'll probably end up with a W/T500 / T400 because they're more practical for my minimalist requirements.

Hopefully that's understandable.

Regards

Andy

Re: Moderators using older models?

Andy thanks for your views.

i really enjoyed reading your perspective.

however, the part about me starting some thread that you "promise to delete / lock" - i dont get

i have no intention of starting a thread that you will have to delete or lock - kind of rude and arrogant there andy -

any way, the balance of your post was most helpful and appreciated

thank you sir.
