Re: T61p - Quadro FX 570 - in trouble?

2008-07-31, 12:48 PM

Honestly, I don't know what we can expect from companies regarding this issue. The 140m and 570m GPUs are probably no longer being produced, and whatever is in the warehouses is flawed.

I seriously doubt nVidia would set up their production lines again to produce "correct" 140m and 570m GPUs for use as replacement parts.

So the only thing we realistically can hope to see is some BIOS/driver fiddling to reduce temp fluctuations as much as possible.

They could also extend the warranty for GPU failures and exchange the failing GPUs for other lemons as long as supply lasts.

Not many options, really. And not really good ones either.

Re: Nvidia Reports Large Quantities of Defective Notebook Chips

Here is some more information.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080716-nvidia-denies-rumors-of-mass-gpu-failures.html

I have read elsewhere that Dell and HP have been confirmed to have these problems, but nothing has been mentioned for Lenovo.

MacBook Pro, with an aluminum unibody enclosure **As of September 15, 2008, our company has completely switched to Apple. Having used ThinkPad products for over 10 years, we had desperately tried to find just one reason to continue using these products, to no avail. We are of the view that ThinkPads are no longer premium products. We wish you the best of luck with your ThinkPad! Happy computing…**

Well, all I want to know is how long the computers with these defective chips can last? assuming they have a fairly good cooling system like the T61p and what level of temp fluctuations are dangerous?

How long computers having defective GPUs can last is a question that probably nobody can answer at that point of time. It depends on too many parameters tied to your individual usage of the laptop (gaming/non-gaming, other 3d apps, ambient temps, sleep/hibernate/power-off cycles etc).

I'm pretty mad about the fact that my very first laptop has a high chance of being affected by this problem. nVidia really screwed up here.

Well yea i guessed as much... was just hoping there might've been another 'hidden article' regarding this issue... atleast about the level of temperature fluctuations that might be dangerous... and ditto here! my first laptop and all this trouble!

Re: T61p - Quadro FX 570 - in trouble?

I have a 2 month old T61p with the 570m and had a crash/failure the other day with the symptoms GotGold describes: "horizontal lines and random symbols appearing on the screen." It did that and eventually I got a blue screen of death.

It works okay now, but I haven't been doing anything graphics intensive since. Am I generally screwed?

All,

I've noted this thread, but have no information to relay on this matter at this time.
