To the mod Maliha: Can you please let me know why my post was removed without explanation? What rule did I violate? I assume posting a reasonable criticsm of Lenovo is not against forum policy. Furthermore the T61p with the faulty GPU issue is a known one which has most definitely had an impact on the longevity of the laptops from that defective production cycle (which in my case was a mere 3 years). Thanks!

Re: how long do lenovo laptops last?

Some units will last longer than the others, but I've heard no serious complaints about W700's internal design at this point...how useful it will be eight years from now remains to be seen, though...

As for longevity...my 701C is 15 years old and works great apart from the battery which died many moons ago. If one is content with running Windows 95, that is...

The motherboard on my 7-year-old A31p has just failed and the machine will be going out for a repair in a few days...can't wait to see that one up and running again...my baby...:smileysad:

My T43/T43p units are going to be five this year and are performing as well - if not better - than when they were new. Knock wood. They love Windows 7, BTW...

My wife's Z61m had a motherboard transplant two months ago and is doing great...full recovery with no side effects...

And the "newcomer" T400 is still way too young to be even looked at seriously...:smileyhappy:

Every machine fails eventually. I try to take good care of my ThinkPads and it usually pays off pretty well...and when it doesn't I just move on to the next one...

My $0.02 only...

In daily use: R60F, R500F, T61, T410

Enjoying retirement: A31p, T42p,

Non-ThinkPads: Panasonic CF-31 & CF-52, HP 8760W

Starting Thursday, 08/14/2014 I'll be away from the forums until further notice. Please do NOT send private messages since I won't be able to read them. Thank you.

4-6 years hopefully. I'm sure it will last at least that. Great machines Thinkpad's are.

I've seen 2 Thinkpads survive for quite a while- a 600E and a T41.

Both were used quite intensively in dirty environments (heavy industry.)

Both survive, though the 600E fares better than the T41 does- the 600E has one blue line down the LCD and one bad speaker, and the T41 has a worn-out keyboard and a DVD drive that only works half the time (plus a battery that lasts 20 minutes).

The 600E is a good 5 years older than the T41, actually... I believe that T41 is a 2003 model while the 600E is from 1998.

They have stood the test of time. 600E was still pretty useful upgraded (288 MB of RAM, a Wi-Fi PC card, and Windows 2000).

The two T510's that I've had, though, are a different story.

The one from August 2010 was badly put together (the keyboard would 'snap' because it was badly seated in the case, the fingerprint reader doesn't pick up half the time because it pushes into the case, and the whine issue).
The one from January 2011, however, has only the whine to detract from it.

The T510s don't seem to be as well built as the others- but again, only time will tell.

Re: how long do lenovo laptops last?

I have a T23 IBM logo'd laptop which runs XP/Pro.  It was new in 2000 and is still being used.  So this is its 11th year. If you look after your PCs and treat them with respect then they should last you a long time.

  •  It is very important to keep your PC clean.  Every week at our house we vacuum our PCs to remove any house dust from the surface of the unit, KB and screen.  Also we do not eat while at the KB .  I know an IBM retired CS who told me that some PCs look like the inside of toasters when they are brought in for service.
  •  Remember to turn your PC off (hibernate or sleep) when it is not i use. This will extend the life of the internal HD (Nowadays HDs have an expected life span of 2-4yrs, however if you look after your PC, they will last a lot longer .... also never install a HD that is not recommended for the speed of your processor ... get the recommended size and speed).
  • If you upgrade your PC,  e.g,. RAM,  find out what type and max. config. your PC supports and locate the instructions that came with your PC to know the correct way to open up your PC, remove the existing sticks and install the new ones. You can do major damage here if you do not do it right.

You may consider this all a big yarn, apple pie and motherhood, but it works. When you invest in a hardware platform it is like the foundation of your house. No matter what you layer on top, the base has to be sound or it will eventually collapse.

The older machines (IBM's) were great and you could expect a few years life - the new Lenovo's - don't expect more than a year. Mine died 8 weeks after their one year warranty expried. Defective hard drive - as their customer DIS-sesrvice informed me. Lenovo is a big scam. Their machines are a piece of junk made in China - basically what you would expect out of something you bought from Wal-Mart. Cheaply made - except you pay 3.5 times the price for it. If you want a machine to last you a few years, I would suggest Dell or Toshiba.
