Link to picture - Thinkpad 560X - 1996-current.  Needs a new boot drive, but boots to BIOS just fine.  Was my daily carried laptop from about 1999 to 2005

Link to picture - This is my favorite thinkpad of them all, so you get to see two pictures of it.

Link to picture - Thinkpad T22 - 2002-Present.  Currently running Ubuntu 10.04, acting as NAS, print server, and master node of a small desktop farm running in my attic.  This system has been dropped out of a moving car, sat on, slept on, soaked in the rain, and the only thing wrong with it is the screen - the inverter is starting to go.  I can get it to life - if I need to check system status or something of that nature, by removing and reseating the cable, which gives me about 20 seconds of monitor display.  Couldn't get it to be aggreeable enough for a photo, though.

My current in-service systems are a Thinkpad X41 (2005, young compared to the others above) and my first brand new Thinkpad - an X201 that arrived on Wednesday.  I'm certain that both of them are more than capable of going the distance as well.

Edit:  sorry about the pictures - completely forgot about the image linking rule.

My ThinkPad T40 is over 8 yrs old. it survived a smash and is still running. I no longer use it as a laptop. It is connected to a number of webcams to work as a home video surveillance server. It runs windows 7 now. ThinkPad's software support is very commendable!!  You can download drivers of an 8 year old machine for Windows 7 from the Lenovo website! I cannot find ANY Win 7 drivers for my 3 year old Vaio. That is why I bought a ThinkPad X201 early last year.

There are a lot of circumstances that would determine how long a laptop lasts.

For me, I have a working T21 Thinkpad and a T43 (which a T510 was supposed to replace) and both are still in working condition. Only sad thing has been the batteries for both notebooks are pretty much dead.

Treat your notebook like your car... Treat it with care!

Good advice. The environment a laptop is used in will go a long way in keeping it going. Unless it is a ruggedized sealed case (such as a Panasonic ToughBook), dust, smoke and contaminants are the biggest factors aside from physical damage. I have a A31p that is about 9 years old and works perfectly. It stays on 24/7. But it has been kept indoors. I don't smoke (this is very bad for any computer) and I keep the area around it clean. Blowing the dust out of heat sinks is important. If you have pets or the machine is used in a dusty area, you should clean it more often.

I have an old 760 I use for programming certain older models of two way radio equipment that requires the use of a real DOS machine with a slower CPU. It was made in 1995, and it still works perfectly except the battery which is shot. Any PC will last if properly cared for.

Excellent advice altogether.

Leaving the machine on 24/7/365 is a must in my experience for any pre-Lenovo ThinkPad with ATi graphics, especially A31p. Of course, turn the screen off when not in use to prolong the life of the CCFL.

Cheers,

George

Strange, my posting here seems to have disappeared somehow.

My Thinkpad Edge 13 initially didn't last very long, it died after one month and after repair it died for a second time within a month.

dogiahung,

Thanks for sharing a positive experience with our products.

I think this is always a case of "your milage may vary".   I used my old X60t tablet for nearly 5  years from 2007-2012 and then have been using a first gen X1 since.  I have  a K1 tablet I use everyday personally, and that is now at least 3 years old.   I bought a ThinkPad Edge for my mother-in-law and the battery on that seems like it is wearing down after about 2 years which is a bit sooner than expected, but the edge I picked up for my brother in law the year before is still going strong....

I have a few "collector" items - a 701c butterfly and a ThinkPad 350, both from the 90's and both still boot although as you would expect, their batteries are aged out.
