Windows 8.1 | Yoga 11s | Low performance when screen flipped

2013-10-21, 17:34 PM

Hi,

I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 and noticed that when the keyboard is flipped behind the screen the performnance is really choppy.

For example if I'm watching a film using VLC in normal laptop mode I won't have any problems but as soon as I flip the keyboard behind the monitor the video will start skipping and becomes un-watchable.

I have tried updating to the latest Windows 8.1 drivers but nothing improves this problem.

Finally, someone with the same issue! I spent most of yesterday trying to figure out what was happening and came to the same conclusion. Hopefully this is an easy & quick fix by Lenovo.

It looks like someone had a similar issue a few months ago: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Windows-based-Tablets-and/Yoga-11s-Lenovo-Transition-Issues/m-p/1175605#M23128

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like anyone offered a real answer at that time.

Getting closer:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Windows-based-Tablets-and/Lenovo-Yoga-13-Throttles-CPU-when-in-Tablet-mode-set-to-Portrait/td-p/914043

This suggests that the CPU is throttled when in tablet stand mode. The culprit may be the "Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework," which is kind of confirmed by a Lenovo employee in that thread.

The strange thing is, I am sure my 11s did not do this under 8.0, so perhaps the update installed a new version that caused issues?

Glad I'm not the only one, didn't have any problem like this when using Windows 8. Only started happening after the Windows 8.1 update.

Do lenovo themselves post on the forums? I'll open a ticket anyway.

Same problems here on the Yoga 13 (i5 4GB RAM).

I can confirm the problem lies with Yoga Mode Control (ymc.exe) ending that in task manager resolves the problem but the keyboard and mouse are not disabled when flipping the keyboard.

Looks like there are three services associated with the Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework:

DptfParticipantProcessorService

DptfPolicyConfigTDPService

DptfPolicyLpmService

I wonder if stopping some combination of them will stop the throttling but keep the keyboard/touchpad managment enabled.

I'm not able to experiment now since my machine is at home (I'm remoting in), but perhaps someone else could.

Stopping ymc.exe also solves the same problem that i have on my Yoga 13 with an i7 & 4GB RAM.

I am a bit concerned about permenantly stopping this process though, as seeing it reduces the CPU speed, fan speed etc, I dont want the screen to overheat due to the fan blowing hotter air than designed (presume that is reason CPU is throttled and fan reduced when in tablet mode) at at the back of the screen.

My guess is that Lenovo tuned/tweaked the parameters of this service, and in the update to 8.1, those tweaks got overwritten or lost. Because I'm pretty sure DPTF was part of the Win8.0 build delivered on the OEM machines, it just didn't work how it seems to be working now.
