Re: [GUIDE] A1 and A1107 Unbrick fix/full factory restore

2012-08-26, 7:40 AM

Thanks beetle.

Do I need to root the tablet before installing this update?

I have read people here expressing disappointment about this not being an OTA update. I thought OTA is just a process and files will be same as manual. My tablet is just weeks old and love it so don't want to turn it in to a brick by attempting this manual update if there is no way returning to factory settings incase of a problem.

Sorry if I am asking basic information here, I am not a developer but still following the posts here to develop my understanding.

Krisuk73,

You don't need to be rooted - because you're booting from the SD card and not the internal storage, it doesn't matter what state the software on the tablet is in.

You're correct that OTA is just a process - however, it would preserve your data, whereas this process does not - everything will be erased.

If you install the ICS update and you find it problematic, you can return to factory settings by performing this procedure with the A1 Gingerbread image instead of the A1107 ICS image.

Jfa,

I'm just checking to see if I can replicate that - I have a guess about what may be happening in your case, but just testing on my A1 first,

Thanks to gmarkall for all his hard work on this. Since it turned out that the A1-07 & 107 have the same amount of RAM the 07 people should be able to have a tablet that is as good as the 107, except for the battery.

I would upgrade my A1-07 to ICS today & root it except for the fact that it would wipe out all my user data. Is it possible to use an adb pull command to backup user data & then an adb push command later to restore it? If so would I want to backup /mnt/asec:

& /mnt/sdcard and/or something else?

Max

P.S. This guide should be a "Sticky"

Thanks a lot Mr Markall.

I have installed the ICS following your guide and it is working well.

I have not found any problems so far except the sound at maximum setting seems to be a little less than than the Gingerbread but does not affect any of my use. I like ICS and will not return to GB!

Thanks again for all your time and help.

Few more but are very minor:

Font size for the time on status bar(bottom right corner) does not change when expanded - overlaps with the date.

Screen auto rotation seems to be (over)sensitive than Gingerbread.

Jfa,

Unfortunately I failed to replicate your problem. Since the tablet is able to present itself as a USB device and respond to touches of the capacitive buttons, it is basically up and running, just without the display output. There are some next steps we could try, which I'll PM you about.

I was wondering if there was a way to retain Root access or to re-root the device after applying the update to ICS. I would like to be able to back up the apps using Titanium Backup and then be able to restore them later using Titanium backup again. Obviuosly this will not work unless I am rooted.

Strongsad,

You can re-root after installing ICS in the same way as you rooted Gingerbread before.

Strongsad, just look at post 15 in this thread. It describes exactly what you want to do. Once rooted, install Titanium Backup and restore.
