FAQ's

____________________________

What is AOSP?

AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project. So an AOSP Rom is a Rom that was compiled by an individual using source code downloaded from android.googlesource.com.

From the AOSP website:

Android is an open-source software stack for mobile devices, and a corresponding open-source project led by Google. We created Android in response to our own experiences launching mobile apps. We wanted to make sure that there was no central point of failure, so that no industry player can restrict or control the innovations of any other. That's why we created Android, and made its source code open.

What is Cyanogenmod?

From the Cyanogenmod website:

CyanogenMod (pronounced sigh-AN-oh-jen-mod), is a customized, aftermarket firmware distribution for several Android devices (See above for supported devices & how to install CyanogenMod on said devices). Based on the Android Open Source Project, CyanogenMod is designed to increase performance and reliability over Android-based ROMs released by vendors and carriers such as Google, T-Mobile, HTC, etc. CyanogenMod also offers a variety of features & enhancements that are not currently found in these versions of Android.

Cyanogenmod 9, or CM9, is based off the Android 4.0 branch, Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS

Cyanogenmod 10, or CM10, is based off the Android 4.1 branch, Jellybean, JB

Re: Ideapad K1 - Which Rom do I choose?

I've successfully made one upgrade (K1_ICS_120607_Rooted.zip) and have been pretty happy with performance of ICS 4.03 after finding I could sideload Google Maps, Chrome, but haven't "finished" the upgrade by adding back apps from old Honeycomb install because of the fast and furious further upgrade options being made available. Questions still being pondered by me:

Is there a difference between CWM and the app ROM Manager (which I've installed but not yet used)

How do khanning's AOSP ICS build and his unofficial CM9 port differ from one another since BOTH lead to ICS 4.04?

Since khanning had previously indicated a future JB version but now krook1 has already released a CM10 Jellybean option, should I go that route? Since it can be installed via CWM do I need a different ROM manager that the app that I've already installed "ROM Manager" which I downloaded from the PlayStore.

Does krook1's release mean khanning is unlikely to continue working to produce his own Jellybean ROM?

And finally, on a tangent that probably should be posted elsewhere, what options does anyone with a t-mobile G2 suggest as far as upgrading to ICS or JB?

Thinkpad X-60 (Linux Mint 13_Maya, running VBox WinXP and Win7

Ideapad K-1 Now running Jelly Bean (kudos to Khanning and krook

Ok - 3G works very well, but the problem is with Google Play that has compatibility issues. Almost every app I try to download is said not to be compatibile with the device, eg Google Maps / Soundhound / TuneIn etc. What is the solution to this? I really would like to stay with ICS so if you have any idea - please tell me. Thanks
