baffling mouse cursor freezes if I remove the WIRED ethernet connection??

2013-01-11, 15:13 PM

Hi all

I just installed XP professional on my S10  model 4231 bios 14cn34ww  dated 08/26/2008

so if I run it connected to the lan using the wired connector all is well BUT the moment I take out the rj45 the mouse cursor freezes. If I plug it back in then all is well again.

I want to use this outside so I need to get this fixed.

any ideas please?

thanks

hi majorkong,

It sounds like there's a possible short somewhere on the system.

Try to do the following:

1. Restart the computer in Safe Mode with Networking (continuously press F8 during boot-up).

2. If all is well, perform a clean boot and observe.

3. If same problem, open Network Connections (press Windows Key + R, then type ncpa.cpl)

4. On the network connections, disable the Local Area Connection.(do a right click > disable)

5. After disabling the LAN, reboot into normal mode & try to use the Touchpad

6. If the Touchpad responded without any issues, try to re-install both the Ethernet driver and then re-install theTouchpad driver

Broadcom Ethernet Driver          Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
v11.31.01                                        v11.1.9.0

IN3ETN03WW1.exe                     IN2THP04WW1.exe
5.02MB                                           6.45MB

Let me know your findings.

Cheers

Hey neokenchi

Thank you for such a complete answer.  Here are some findings:

1  completely reformatted the drive ( low level) and then installed UBUNTU and the problem still existed. From this I determined that it's a hardware fault as the drivers are completely different.

2 Found out that If I removed the AC adapter and the rj45 it WORKED which gave more credance to the hardware problem.

3 reinstalled XP and the problem remained BUT on a whim I took out the battery when the system was running and the problem went away!

I was able to use the mouse without the wired connection and all was well. Not sure what the battery has to do with the mouse BUT it's working right now so fingers crossed.

If it happens again I will try your approach but right now I don't want to jepodize anything. Thanks for taking the time though.

Hi there neokenchi

My touchpad problem came back and I did all the steps you suggested but no luck.  Here's the latest situation

Mouse will NOT move if

power supply plugged in  and NO wired connection ( rj45) connected.

mouse WILL move if

power supply plugged in AND wired connection ( rj45) connected.

mouse WILL move if

no power supply connected no wired connection ( basically portable mode).

It's not the drivers as this happens with Ubuntu as well.

Any ideas?

thanks

hi majorkong,

It seems like the issue happens only if you connect the AC adapter to the PC. Is it possible for you to use a different charger? Upon checking, the AC adapter should have a rating of 20V 1.5A or 2A.

If using a spare or an identical AC adapter doesn't fix it, then there's a possible short between the motherboard and the Touchpad (my guess is the touchpad board itseflf). What you can try is to re-seat the palm rest assembly (see page 65 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual).

Note:

Please be careful in disassembling your PC as it contains very sensitive parts.

Cheers.

Hey neokenchi

tried all of your great suggestions but no luck. I even tried it with the palm rest assembly not screwed in just connected by it's cables and it still did nothing?

when you say a possible short between the touchpad and the mb what would I be looking for please?

thanks

Re: baffling mouse cursor freezes if I remove the WIRED ethernet connection??

hi majorkong,

For circuit boards, if too much voltage is applied (usually happens if you have sudden electric spikes), it might fry up the circuit or render it faulty - it may work but the functionality is intermittent. This rarely happens especially if you have a circuit breaker and a voltage spike protector. It could also be a flaw on the wirings inside. If re-seating the cables doesn't help, there's a big possibility that the circuit board itself is faulty and the only way to find out is to run an onboard dianostic on the hardware (these tools are usually given to authorized service providers). If you don't mind sending the unit in for service,  recommend you have the notebook looked at a local service center near you or directly thru lenovo. Support phone list here.

Hope this helps.

Hey neokenchi

great to hear from you again and thanks for all your help, it really has been useful.  I assume we are at the end of what I can do so I will look into taking this into a service center, I live in Chicago.

I have power regulators on all my computer equipment so that probably isn't the cause of this. Thanks again for all you help.
