Dual-band wifi card supported by Y580?

2012-09-04, 20:26 PM

I just received my Y580 today.  As expected, based on the specs, the included Centrino 2200 card supports only 2.4GHz.  I would like to replace the wifi card with one that supports 5GHz networks, as my WirelessN network runs on this band.  Yes, I could also run N on the 2.4GHz band, but I have good reasons for not being able to do this.

From what I've been reading over the past hour or so, though, it appears that there is some sort of hardware "white list" in the Y580's BIOS that will prevent me from just running over to Amazon and picking up a Centrino 6235, for example.

So, I found a Centrino 6235 on ebay that appears to specifically be for select laptops (including the Y480).  Will this card work also in the Y580 if it works in the Y480?

Thanks in advance for the help.  I sort of figured ahead of time that I'd end up replacing the wifi card once I got the laptop, but I've never had a laptop that actually restricted the hardware I could put in it (all have been Dells, just by coincidence).

I'm sitting here running off a 5GHz 300Mbps network I never thought I'd see again.

You be the judge.  :smileywink:

I'd also be interested in this since the WiFi card (Intel 2200) that comes preinstalled in the Y580 gets very poor reception from my experience. I'd like to swap it out for a dual band to see if it helps with performance.

Re: Dual-band wifi card supported by Y580?

I emailed the seller to ask whether it would work with the Y580.  His reply was that "it should work, but may require white bios" (presumably the seller means a modified BIOS with the whitelist changed/modified).

I then replied to confirm that it would work in the Y480 *without* modification but have not received a reply yet.  If I am told that it will work in a Y480 without modification, I'll buy one and give it a shot.  I'll post my results back if I do go that route.  If I don't hear from him, I'll probably try it anyway.  I'd feel better about my chances of success if Lenovo provided a download link for the Y580 BIOS, allowing me to go off and make the card work regardless.

I wish I had a clear yes/no answer for you.  It looks like that 6235 is not in theY480/Y580 FRU list in the HMM (page 79): IdeaPad Y480, Y580 Hardware Maintenance Manual

That's not a good sign.

Re: Dual-band wifi card supported by Y580?

Hello.

I've found another y580 bios rom file and managed to get following wireless cards PCI id's from it's whitelist:

(Vendor ID) - (Device ID) - (Subsystem ID)

8086 - 0891 - 8086 4222

8086 - 0886 - 8086 1513

14E4 - 4727 - 14E4 051B

14E4 - 4727 - 14E4 0587

14E4 - 4358 - 14E4 0544

168C - 002E - 17AA 31A4

168C - 002B - 17AA 30A1

168C - 002B - 17AA 31A1

168C - 0032 - 17AA 3118

168C - 0032 - 17AA 3218

168C - 0034 -  17AA 3214

As you can see, list of wlan cards is really small. Of these, 8086 are by intel, 14e4 by broadcom and 168c by atheros. You can search for wlan cards using these IDs. Warning! BIOS will accept WLAN card if and only if it's IDs EXACTLY match one of the above, all the others, even having the same model name / being technically identical, will not pass wl check.

Awesome, thank you both. I hadn't found the y580 HMM, so having that list is very helpful. Unfortunately, none of the listed cards are dual-band. :-/

Sfairat, where did you find a Y580 bios rom? With that, there are tools to make any hardware work. :-)

Ah, never mind ... I should know better than to ask a question I can answer myself with Google. I found both a link to a Y580 bios as well as info on how to dump my own. As soon as I get back to a real computer, I'll start taking a look.

Thanks!

http://forum.techinferno.com/lenovo-ibm/2065-unlocking-y580-bios.html

Also, you can get it using Universal bios backup toolkit tool.

Regarding your previous post, I assume that you know that using modded bios can be dangerous and etc)

I had the same problem as you with mine y570, so I simply replaced an existing wl entry with my new wireless card device id using ezh20 & hxd.

Yes, I am aware of the risks, etc. Thanks much for the info, that is exactly what I'd like to do.
