Z580 slow boot after RAM upgrade w/ Optimus enabled

2012-12-05, 15:17 PM

New user here...have had my z580 (Win7 64bit) for a couple months and just did a RAM upgrade from the stock 6gb to 16gb. it was confirmed in another forum that it supports 16gb so i took a chance on the ram below:

G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory ModelF3-1600C11D-16GSQ

But then booting up went from about 5 secs (i have an SSD installed) to about 90+ secs. i read on another forum that a temp fix would be to go to the bios settings and disable Optimus (it has an nvidia gt 630) and just force UMA. i did that and it booted up as quick as before. the 16gb were also recognized so i figured it's not a RAM issue? maybe a driver issue?

Well since my laptop is still relatively new, i didnt have alot installed on it...so i decided to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 w/ the 16gb RAM installed. Went thru the whole process successfully re-installed essential drivers but it was the same result...whenever i booted up w/ Optimus enabled it would take over 90 secs, when i disabled Optimus, boot time was quick as before.

Has anyone had this issue before? Or could point me to where i can find a fix for it? In the meantime, i re-installed the stock 6gb that was running no problem.

thanks!!!

Re: Z580 slow boot after RAM upgrade w/ Optimus enabled

I tried 16gb myself with the Z580 and i had boot problem, mostly random black screens at boot, memtest+ v5.0 says the memory is fine, all i can say is the Z580 is not certified for 16gb :(

Has anybody noticed i bought two 4gb z580 one i put 2x4gb the samsung memory that comes with the z580 in one,the other z580 i bought 2x4gb crucial memory, but when i run the Win7 memory diagnostic all i get is a black screen and i have to hold the power button down, same thing happens with 16gb.

Why does Win7 memory diagnostic only work with 4gb on the Z580?

hi there,

it sounds like ram issue. please, try to upgrade 8+4 first. make sure you installed the 8 gb to the first slot. if it doesn't work, i suggest you to replace the ram sticks with another brand. there may a compatible issue.

hope this helps.

I had 12Gb RAM on my new Z580 and also notice same behavior. I send laptop to seller and after investigation he told me that this laptop works fine with max 8Gb installed.

Just leave one bank memory (8gb) and see if this problem will still exitst.

Is there any chance to improve this memory limit by manufacturer? Maybe via BIOS upgrade...

I have the same problem and I have spent months trying to figure out till I found this post. As soon I disabled Optimus, boot times and computer performance improved drastically. My question is, can I not have Optimus enabled at all now? Or do I need to downgrade to 8GB and only then can I enable Optimus?

What is Lenovo's position on this?
