That is easy to answer: because that box was never designed to run with SSDs ;-)

SSDs are NOT a 1:1 replacement for HDDs, there is a lot of special software, firmware and drivers around ( which wasn_t even the case with OS below W7 !)
The ixOS never had the possibilities to control SDDs (although SATA/Power connecors certainly match).
This probably would also happen if you just put the SSD into an enclosure, if the enclosure interface is not designed to work with SDDs. It also does not make any sense (speedwise) as the Ix2s USB2.0-port will never get to the point that you realize SSD-speed..... (SSDs with SATA may run up tp 600 MB/s, whereas USB2.0 fills 25 Mbit/s if you are happy...)
Why not just take the pieces that fit?

I refused to use mixed models of hard drives. since the second disk usually has the same resource, you don’t need to leave it. I do the following: I acquire 2 identical disks, recently it is a WD black 2 TB, I put one in place of the failed, I wait for to rebuild the array, and then change the second disk.
