Re: ix4 - 300d data lost after update

Gilkor, here is the feedback that we have received from the support team.

***********************************

After reviewing the logs and based on actual data, data recovery will not be possible.

  • Without reviewing all logs (as there are hundreds), I could find failed drive events occurring at least from August 26 2018 on disk 4 (/dev/sdd)

Aug 28 23:16:05 Fileserver kernel: sd 3:0:0:0: [sdd] Unhandled error code

Aug 28 23:16:05 Fileserver kernel: sd 3:0:0:0: [sdd]  Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00

Aug 28 23:16:05 Fileserver kernel: sd 3:0:0:0: [sdd] CDB: cdb[0]=0x28: 28 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 04 00

Aug 28 23:16:05 Fileserver kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdd, sector 65536

This is also reflected on no disk array signature (attached is output of a good working disk)

Disk /dev/sdd partition information

======================================

Output from: parted /dev/sdd print

  • Disk 1 must have been replaced/altered by the customer as
    • Drive is NTFS formatted which has incorrect file system

Number  Start   End     Size    File system  Name                  Flags

1      1049kB  1000GB  1000GB  ntfs         Basic data partition

  • There is no RAID mdadm signature (needed on our LenovoEMC nas device since we’re use mdadm software raid technology)
  • There are read error on the drive

Since the device was configured with RAID 5 and that 1 drive is failed and another is having incorrect file system (and no 2nd partition used for the data volume), RAID 5 volume cannot be started (as supporting only 1 failed drive) and therefore data cannot be retrieved.

    Number   Major   Minor   RaidDevice State

       0       0        0        0      removed

       1       8       18        1      active sync   /dev/sdb2

       2       8       34        2      active sync   /dev/sdc2

       3       0        0        3      removed

Conclusion :

Disks 1 & 4 seem bad/faulty, making data recovery not possible (using normal means). I would recommend the customer to contact data recovery company.
