15 mth old Lenovo G430 no display, no startup (UNRESOLVED)

2010-10-06, 7:39 AM

Here is my story of how a 15mth old Lenovo laptop died on me..

15mths ago I purchased a Lenovo G430. 3 weeks ago it expired without warning. Asked by Lenovo support over the phone to do a hardware reset: remove battery & adapter, push power-up button 30 secs, replace power adapter and battery and power up. Unfortunately, it did not work.

First round:

1) Battery charging light on when adapter plugged in, but no startup lights, no display, no sound.

I then brought it to the shop where I bought it from (Lenovo reseller) who diagnosed that motherboard was gone. He gave me a rough estimate of S$600-800 for replacement as my warranty was expired. Which is equivalent of a 2/3 price of a new laptop here..?? I checked the HDD with a HD reader, all the information was fine. I tried to reseat the RAM as well, but no cure. I then bought it a repairshop, who replaced the graphic chip*. (edited 27/10: they replaced some bridge, not the graphic card) (S$280)

Second round: after replacement of graphic chip*

1) Laptop supposedly repaired, but when went to collect, did not start up. laptop sent back for repairs.

Third round: after replacement of graphic chip*

1) Laptop managed to start up in shop, everything seems fine. (on battery)

2) Bought laptop home, tried to start up with battery and adaptor, battery light & adapter light came on, laptop fan started up for 3-5 secs, HDD ran for 3-5secs, no display, then laptop died.

3) tried hardware reset, run on battery/ adapter.. no use.

Fourth round:

1) Laptop sent back for repairs.....waiting

Right now I am not sure if it is a Nvidia graphic card issue (NVIDIA 256MB GeForce 9300M GS) or if my motherboard needs to be replaced. If the motherboard needs to be replaced, how come I managed to start up my laptop once after repair and see everything was fine? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not very good with computers..

I upgraded to Windows 7 after a few months, and have connected the laptop to external displays without any issue before. The laptop also does not feel hot and I usually leave a gap between it and and table. So I'm not sure if there was a heating problem... (laptop usually 54 degrees).** (edited 27/10: laptop ran from 45-90 degrees after 3 repair: at full power settings. Solution was to minimise processing power)

The only bad thing I recall doing was probably leave the laptop (without battery) to adapter to wall socket overnight twice. Could it be an issue..? Cause if my charger is still apparently charging my battery.. (battery indicator goes from orange to blue) The power brick was very hot sometimes.*** (edited 27/10: unstable power in my house could be an issue)

I have never dropped the laptop or spilled anything on it.

I'm guessing so much cause I have no knowledge or tools to properly diagnose the problem.. the repairshop I'm going to can't even tell me what the issue is.

How can a laptop die within 15 months...? Any clues..?

*(edited 27/10: they replaced some internal bridge, not the graphic card)

Can be two things:

  1. Corrupt BIOS.
  2. Dead motherboard.

A motherboard repair can cost arround 200 USD and you can do it in some specialized laptop repair center.

Is there a way to tell the difference between the two..? What are the options I am looking at in the case of corrupt BIOS..?

I didn't read you entire response (sorry). It can be too a graphic card problem too.

Just wait for your laptop and tell us what happens.

Hi IPnaSh, thanks for replying my questions. It's been 3 days and the shop still hasn't called me.. If you're right i probably wasted money on the repair ... let's see. :(

here's what I posted earlier:

If the motherboard needs to be replaced, how come I managed to start up my laptop once after repair (replacement graphic card*) and see everything was fine? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Changes: Graphic card changed *

Difference: Laptop start up once ok, then subsequent startups DID NOT work.

Improvement: Indicators light up, at least starts up for 5 secs before dying. (previously didnt start up)

Much thanks

But your laptop has integrated GPU, right? It isn't a separate card I guess. Ummm, maybe they are doing a "rework".

If the problem is the GPU itself, once it repaired, in theory you won't get never again a related problem. Just wait until they call you.

Nope its a separate card: Nvidia graphic card issue (NVIDIA 256MB GeForce 9300M GS)

Just got a call its repaired and the person who passing it back to me says he left it on for 1 day to check.. he's not the technician so he doesn't know how to explain what happened. I hope to know at least if its preventable on my end (like cranky electrical wiring in my house).

Let's hope its really ok this time..! fingers crossed.

Anyway, I came across these links for those interested in these kind of problems and might like to repair your laptops yourselves:

Ok my G430 is repaired. Not sure what's the problem but probably related to motherboard. My receipt said: 'rework'.

Had to revalidate my windows 7 as a result. Now my windows updates is not working.. but at least I can use the laptop now. :D yay

sorry i dun have a more technical answer.
