G580: Cannot enter BIOS in UEFI mode

2012-10-06, 17:26 PM

I have the exact same problem on my new G580 and have tried removing the hard drive, the 30-second power button press, and various other function key combinations, without luck. And I do indeed run Windows 7 in UEFI mode and which was for a very short while in dual-boot configuration with Ubuntu.

Can someone share the solution here, or am I still advised to PM someotherguy?

Edit: Sorry, I just realised this forum is for ThinkPad models. Can the forum moderator move this to the appropriate forum, please.

I had wanted to re-flash the original BIOS on my G580, but am unable to locate the download. Can someone please tell me if it's available at all? This is my first ever experience with being unable to download (or having to struggle so much to locate it) something as straightforward as a BIOS firmware for either a desktop or a laptop. Incidentally, this is my first Lenovo buy.

hi.

i've looked everywhere i can think to, and also don't see any BIOS downloads. if or when an update does get released, you'll find it here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT073548

i would recommend that you call Service and see what options they can offer you.

phone #s: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=PD008370

for UK, specifically: 0844 2491112, 9am-6pm M-F

hope this helps a bit.

hi codelad,

Thanks for posting your concerns and welcome to the community.

What Sarbin has suggested is definitely a good idea. The service is always the point of contact and here at the community we do our level best to assist in a diffrent manor. However after reading through your post I did some digging up on your case and came across a case that was more or less similar to yours.

However in his case the issue was primarily due to the ram that was casing this. I not entirely sure how it is related but I would suggest checking you system s Ram. Just to be sure of course. Try unplugging and plugging in the Ram again to ensure that's it has been inserted properly.

In the case of the similar issue I stumbled upon, the user had changed his Ram, so that was the main issue.

I'm not sure if this is any help but in my opinion it is certainly worth the try.

hope this helps.

regards

@sarbin:

Thank you very much. I'd been trying to get to their customer service on the phone all afternoon, without luck - the call repeatedly times out while I wait in their queue. I tried emailing them on their support email, only to be told to seek help over their phone support. It may well be a coincidence that their lines are currently busy - still not happy at all. BTW, I'm trying to use their support numbers here in India.

@NINE:

Thank you. I tried re-inserting the memory and also trying it on a different slot. No luck.

The only consolation is that my BIOS settings appear to be just what I need (UEFI + AHCI boot mode), so I may not need to change it immediately. I'm overall not very pleased with my Lenovo so far. I understand it's a budget-end model, but the build quality is not what I expected (a noticeably wobbly battery, loose hinges, and generally a very cheapish feel all over). Used to own a 300 series Thinkpad, several years back (a '96 model, I think), and this is nowhere close, sans the modern specs.

do you recall which BIOS version you're at?

you can open a cmd prompt and run msinfo32.exe. it should list the version on the summary screen.

regards.

BIOS version and date: 62CN37WW, 6/13/2012

Appears a recent release and there apparently is no update available. What is puzzling is that there seems to be no way I could download the existing version and re-flash it.

Thank you.

I have this bios, but I guess even if u reflash it u will not have access to the bios. Sell your laptop and buy Dell or HP which are better...

Hi

my g580 bios version: 62CN34WW

I have translated in google.

Can not be guaranteed, I accidentally found a way to display the BIOS.
Try if you have carried out and ready to re-install and repair.

############################################################
From NVRAM of UEFI BIOS, then reboot to remove all OS ENTRY.
############################################################

after remove all OS ENTRY.
reboot -> press F12 [appear "Boot Menu"] -> press TAB [appear "App Menu"]
-> select "setup" on "App Menu"
