Can I use an external monitor as my primary monitor in Windows XP

2010-06-19, 0:02 AM

I need to use an external monitor as my primary and I have Windows XP installed on my 3000 N100. How do I do it?

Thanks in advance,

Yes. This should be an option under the software driving your graphics adapter.   There is more than one way to access that.  Shut your laptop off, connect your external display to it, start the display & then the laptop..  The laptop may well show you a dialogue asking how you wish to use the external monitor, just follow the dialogue to use an external monitor as a primary one.  If not, open Control Panel, then open 'Display', go to the 'Settings' tab, where your choices will be displayed.   Some monitors have downloadable drivers that provide more options that your basic operating system provides.

And, enter bios on boot, F1 key, under Advanced tab, Power On Display,

make sure Auto Selected is chosen.

I tried rebooting and didn't get any prompt for the monitor. When I go into the settings and select the monitor as primary, both displays blink and then the external monitor goes blank, and both the extend my desktop and the use as primary monitor are unchecked and the external monitor is disabled.

I went into the bios, and sure enough, power on display was set to LCD. I changed it to auto and when I rebooted, the Windows boot splash screen came up on the external monitor, but when when windows came up the rest of the way, the LCD screen was still primary. I tried to go into the settings and change it and the same behavior happened. The monitors blinked, the external monitor blacked out, and both boxes were unchecked on the external monitory. Also, it placed the external monitor icon back in the default position, to the right of monitor 1.

Sounds like you are part way there, now just to figure out the proper

settings for within windows.

Try poking around in the Intel graphics adapter driver properties settings.

It should override windows settings?

Look in Control Panel.
