Help! How to reset CMOS on 3000 N200 model 0769?

2008-10-09, 2:09 AM

Hi,

I need to reset the CMOS (memory which holds the BIOS settings) on my Lenovo 3000 N200 model 0769 laptop. Is there any way to do that without needing to physically remove or short the CMOS battery?

If I have to remove the battery, where is it? On other models of 3000 N200, the battery is under the keyboard, and is removable (shown in maintenance manual and in video on www.lenovoservicetraining.com). However, for model 0769 there is no specific info. Page 99 of the maintenance manual for the 0769 (42x3353-02.pdf on Lenovo's site) has a diagram which shows what could be the CMOS battery near the front right of the main board. Unfortunately it may well be soldered to the board, not removable.

Can anyone confirm whether the CMOS battery is soldered to the main board?

Why do you need to remove the battery? Entering BIOS and selecting "Setup Defaults" will do this also.

It is possible for the CMOS to be corrupted so that the POST/BIOS setup screen does not appear. In that case you have to reset the CMOS manually, for example by removing the CMOS backup battery, to "un-brick" the laptop.

Luckily there is a way to reset the CMOS for the Lenovo 3000 N200 model 0769, which doesn't require the battery to be removed or de-soldered. This is not documented in the maintenance manual, but can be incredibly useful. If your machine just beeps a few times when you turn it on (nothing on the display, machine otherwise appears dead), it's worth resetting the CMOS since that might save you having to RMA the laptop, or pay $$$ for out-of-warranty repair.

Turn off the laptop, remove the battery and AC adapter. Remove the access panel that covers the hard disk and wireless card. Examine the corner of the PCB opposite the wireless card. There are two exposed metal traces labelled CLRP1. You need to short those traces together for a few seconds.

You could use the end of a small flat-bladed metal screwdriver, or if you have a multimeter set it to measure current and put one probe on each trace.

After doing that the laptop should power on correctly. It will report that the time and date is not set, and that the CMOS checksum is bad. That's normal when the CMOS has been reset. Press F1 to enter the setup menu.

No problem.

I haven't tested this, but the CMOS reset procedure might remove user and supervisor BIOS passwords; perhaps CLRP is short for clear password? Anyone have time to check that? (Of course it wouldn't remove hard disk passwords, since those are stored on the hard disk itself.)

All,

This has been a great technical discussion to this point.   As a reminder, the rules of the forum prohibit discussion of security or password defeats.

Some posts here were edited or removed for this reason.

Locking the thread to prevent accidental re-occurance, but believe there is value to the posts above for the purpose of resetting a system in which the CMOS is corrupted and the machine cannot boot as described above.
